Remembering 9/11

"Nearly 3,000 people were killed after four planes were hijacked by attackers from the Al Qaeda terrorist group.

Two planes flew into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York. One plane was flown into the Pentagon. Another aircraft crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back — the only plane that didn't reach its intended destination."

I saw the second plane hit live on TV. Didn’t seem real.

My son’s birthday is today. 36 years old.

I was in a shipyard and turned on the TV in my stateroom, seeing the second plane go in, wondering WTF just happened.

I had just parked to open the bank where I worked in Fort Worth, Texas. It was a right at 8:00 local time and the radio news was just reporting a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At that point the speculation was it was a small plane that had gone off course or had some kind of emergency or had a mechanical failure. Of course, I’ll never forget that day, but also how the entire country basically came to a standstill for the entire week after that.

On Patriot Day, I would like also to remember the hundreds of Canadian families from small communities who lodged and fed thousands of stranded passengers. Also the hundreds of Canadians First Responders who gave-up their vacation time to descend on New York to relieve their overwhelmed and overworked counterparts.

You don't hear much about that on the news.

I remember exactly where I was on that day when I heard it on the radio.

One of the saddest days in America history.

I just heard it mentioned on the news here today about the response of Chicago firefighters who left Chicago immediately after the attacks had occurred and traveled straight to NYC. I’m not sure why, but I had never thought much about that. I remember first responders traveling from around the country, but I had never thought much about the relatively close proximity of Chicago to NYC. Within just a few hours several hundred Chicagoland firefighters were arriving in NYC to help.

Did you you know there is a Broadway play about the response from the people of Gander, Newfoundland? I would say their response is pretty well known among most Americans who were around on 9/11. The play continues to tour to this day and has received critical acclaim. https://comefromaway.com/story.php

I was watching it on TV at my girlfriend's apartment in downtown in NYC and we left around 9. When we got outside and looked down 3rd Avenue, both towers were now on fire and we stood there trying to figure out how that could have happened. Someone suggested that the fire jumped between the towers but I knew that was just not possible. I soon learned that I had just missed seeing the 2nd plane hit.

I went back to the Upper West Side and there were sirens all the time for days.

I went to high school with Christopher Collisanti and he was one of the thousands lost.

What a terrible day that changed the world forever...

Happy birthday to your son. The wife's birthday is today, too (76). That helps us keep 9/11 locked in to our memories.

What an incredibly awful day that was.

No, you don't. There's so much "news" today that some that is important gets left out or is only fleetingly reported.

I was in my office in that morning and had appointments in Darien, Ct. in the afternoon, about an hour away from ground zero. A customer was on the phone when he told me to turn on a TV. We spend a hour on the phone together watching all this happen. The following weeks are burned into my memory. At least we were all Americans that day if only for 24 hours.

Speaking of assisting our neighbors, let's remember the more than 2,000 US personnel that have been deployed to assist with the fires in Canada. It is very brave and courageous that both countries, among many other countries, come to the aid of their fellow man. The way it should be.

Also, thank you to Canada for opening its airports when the US closed its airspace after the terrorist attacks and taking in hundreds of planes with thousands of passengers on them.

And lastly, RIP to the 24 Canadians who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

RIP to all of those who lost their lives.

343 New York City Firefighters died on 9/11.

Since then, over 341 more FDNY members have died from cancer and diseases caused by the toxic dust at Ground Zero.

Tragic…

Many years ago, during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, NBC did a feature on the warmth and kindness of the Canadian people during this time.

It is a fabulous piece, and listed on YouTube. I highly recommend the video. It is titled: 9/11: Operation Yellow Ribbon (Gander, Newfoundland)

I was in the process of moving into my new home. I was half awake when I turned on the TV in my bedroom laying on the floor. I snapped out of the haze when I saw one of the planes hit one of the towers. I was on call at the time for one of those three letter organizations and had a government furnished cell phone. I immediately called into the office to speak with my manager. My manager picks up the phone and I ask if I need to come into the office. Was surprised I got through. He said don't and to stay put. They're evacuating the entire compound.

After hanging up, I walk outside and stood in the front yard of my new house staring up into the sky. I still remember the dead silence and absence of any aircraft flying overhead. I also remember the helpless feeling I had where I wanted to immediately do something.

After a few days, I was given the green light to report in to work. When I approached one of the entrances to the compound, I saw a display of force/security I've never seen before. Right then I knew things will never be the same again.

I really hope people do not forget what happened on this day. As time goes on, I know people are going to forget or just not care anymore. I do know there are a number of dancing social events being run tonight in my area. I have mixed feelings about having an event such as that on a day like this.

I have visited the memorial at the Pentagon and at Ground Zero. I really need to get over to Shanksville to pay my respects there.

My son went to Ground Zero one year for his Birthday. I don't remember what year it was. He went alone; he wanted to go alone. He said it gave him chills.
