M2 comp vs Supra Vs Cayman

Pretty even handed review that nails the pros and cons of each car.

Trying to rank these three cars is totally subjective depending on what you're priorities are.

These are the three I have been considering for my next purchase. Well, I would include the M340i too.

It is really interesting, I feel the BMW is a different car, more practical and less of a dedicated 3rd car so to speak.

Supra seems to be 95% as good as the Cayman for 65% of the price. Which seriously gets you thinking.

Properly specced though, the Cayman just looks cleaner and more athletic. There is also resale to consider i guess.

So interesting, what the take away from all of these types of comparisons is that everyone is always chasing Porsche. I like all of these three cars, but I'd take the Porsche, then Supra then BMW.

Something to consider is how you're using the car.

As a daily, the M2 is tough to beat; enough room for 4 people, a proper trunk, more than sporty enough.

But I can see how these cars can easily oscillate between a 1st to 3rd ranking, depending on the buyer.

But the Supra with a manual would be a really enticing option at $50k.

These guys were way more critical of the M2C than any other review. Most reviews agree that the Cayman is the better sports car since it is a purpose-built sports car, however some (including recently Motor Trend) say the M2C is simply a more fun car to drive.

Jason Cammisa in a recent Hagerty vid said the M2CS is far superior to the Supra.

I shopped these three and the RS3. RS3 is too front heavy and needs the most work to be track ready. Being 6'1", 200#, I found the M2C to be best for a DD.

For a weekend 2-seater, I'd choose C8 Z51 over Supra or Cayman.

I really wish they would compare the M2C to a base cayman. A Cayman S is a considerably more expensive car. Heck even a base cayman is generally going to cost more than an M2C since Porsche options are so expensive.

Reviews comparing the M2 vs Supra vs Cayman are all over the place. Every single review I've watched or read ranks them differently, to the point that I think it really just depends on what the buyer is using the car for. All three are tied for first place in my eyes.

If money is no issue and you just want the best mid-engine sports car as a weekend toy, go Cayman.
If money is an issue and you want a sports car experience and don't mind lack of manual trans and rear seats, go Supra.
If money is an issue and you want manual trans, rear seats and useable trunk, go M2.

It's really as simple as that.

The Cayman S is in a different league at 10/10ths. And it's a whole lot lighter, which you can only engineer around to a point. I think the M2C is hilarious fun at 9/10ths or less. It loves to be tossed around and slid, and it doesn't really bite you. The problem for me with all M2 (other than the CS which is supposedly much better, but I haven't driven) is how lacking they are in terms of front axle load feedback. Comp is better than the OG, but still not as good as the Supra. And the Cayman is in a different league vs the Supra. I don't mean road texture, but rather being able to feel through the wheel the difference between carrying front slip angle but the tires are still in the window of generating peak grip vs when they go past. This sort of thing doesn't matter to 95% of people who actually buy cars like this, so BMW has placed less of a priority on it over the last 10 years or so. For whatever reason, it still matters to Porsche engineers.

For some people, finding a car that nails that last 10% of things is everything. For others it doesn't effect their choice at all. I think that's why the reviews are kinda all over the place as Jeff01234567 was saying. The Cayman does everything right (except it sounds like garbage) if you want a tool for driving. The M2C does a lot really well, but falls short if you're a certain type of user that prioritizes a certain narrow window of use case.
