I'm a fan of old school hip hop/rap. As I'm getting older I'm starting to see how people and society actually is rather than how it is portrayed and I have to agree with you here.

Let's remove the gangster lifestyle image from rap music....what does that leave us? Will Smith? Maybe that Canadian guy.....(hold up googling) oh yeah Drake (obviously I am not a fan) Perhaps the Christian rap artists i.e. DC Talk. In my opinion if you are a rap artist, you are either living that lifestyle or portray that you are, neither is really commendable as far as I'm concerned....which is weird because I love old school hip hop and rap.

I like some old school Rap music too. Drake surrounds himself with gangsters, there have been shootings at parties he's hosted with a young woman being shot to death at the Muzik Club in Tronto. So my view stands....and this just in.

According to police sources, on March 31, 2019, Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in South Los Angeles at about 3:25 p.m.. Two others were wounded in the shooting.[67][68] All three victims were transported to a hospital, where Hussle was pronounced dead. He was 33 years old.[69] Upon hearing the news, numerous celebrities offered their condolences on social media.[70][71] Sources state that one suspect fled in a vehicle.[72] A news briefing has revealed the suspect to be a young black male, and initial information has pointed to the shooter being affiliated with a gang.[73]

Just wanted to point out that Frank Sinatra had a criminal record and hung out with gangs.

Yup, love his music but if he got shot I wouldn't have lost any sleep. I love the Stones, they used HA for security and some poor guy got killed by them at Monterey. Life is about choices, make your choices and live with them.

Not to get to far off topic but it was at Altamont and that guy pulled out a handgun and got what he deserved. Not that I'm defending the Angels because they caused a lot of mayhem at the show, including knocking out Martin Balin of Jefferson Airplane right on stage.

I think my point is valid though, if you hang around with criminals don't be surprised when crime happens.

I have a criminal record and at one point kept the company of some very unsavory characters myself. Although I'm not a musician or recording artist I'm no longer in that lifestyle and no longer have to deal with the associations thereof. The most successful people I know, have a dark history. Everyone has a past, it's what you do with the lessons learned that proves who you are.

I agree with a lot of these points.

But, how do you change the community without being IN the community?

My point was that yes, he was affiliated. But his intention was not to carry on that life, but provoke change for the better. You can't do that by leaving the community.

Rap reflects the realities (to a point) of the culture. That's why so many love it.
It's hood stories, swag, mourning, all wrapped in code that those "in the know" can relate to. That's why we love it.

But the sad reality is that it's not a good or healthy lifestyle, and that's where Nips strategy was key.

Change the culture, change the role models.

You and I aren't that far apart. My point was simply that you might think you've left the gang life but that doesn't mean the gang see's it that way. The fix is to get kids to not join gangs, but when you look at pop culture, ie Rap Music and the whole lifestyle it portrays what do you think will happen.

I did a lot of work in very remote fly in First Nations communities. Worst thing they ever got was the internet and satellite TV. Kids acting and dressing all gangster, and low and behold gangs too.

I knew a little about Nipsey Hussle but he wasn't big like Drake. He had ties to the crips and the killer was a gang member.

Since they already had a funeral going, did they just pile the new ones on top?

Too soon?

This whole situation cracks me up. Nobody had ever heard of this guy and now everybody, especially the media and athletes, want to act like he was some sort of legendary mogul.

It's unfortunate somebody died, but stop putting on this face with "RIP Nipsey" bullshit for attention.

I'm an old head when it comes to rap, give me some Nas or Jay any day.

Plenty of people have heard of him, he just wasn't in the mainstream scene anymore. Which is why A LOT of new people are just hearing about him now. I don't know about you but my generalization of people who watch the news are older people who don't like rap music to begin with.

I do however agree with people who are saying RIP and now listening to his music. Happens a lot. No one really cares about you until you're dead. Great example; XXXTentacion, everyone used to criticize his music by saying its garbage, now that he's dead people are praising him as if he was some god tier artist.

I still, to this day - have no idea who he was (other than a rapper)... and also have no idea who shot him or why. I guess I subconsciously chose not to research it.

Listen to Victory Lap
Jay spent $10k on Nipsey's $100 Mixtapes. He respected the hustle and the music.
