The Running Thread
I see a bunch of threads on general fitness, lifting, and other great workouts, but I didn't see one for running. So I thought I would start one and see what happens.
New Year's = New You, right? Joking.... Post up your runs, your questions, etc. Maybe as a community we can help each other out hitting goals, faster times, more motivation, etc.

Here is my (recent) running history in terms of distances:
2013: Goal 100 miles (FAIL) 2014: Goal 100 miles (HIT) 2015: Goal 250 miles (HIT) 2016: Goal 365 miles (HIT) 2017: Goal 500 miles (HIT) 2018: Goal 750 miles (HIT) 2019: Goal 1000 miles (HIT) I was super excited about the 1000 miles in a year in 2019. I know there are people out there who run A LOT more than that, but as you can see - only a few years ago I couldn't make it 100 miles in a year. 2020 Goal is 1200 miles! Super excited to take this on. Anyone else?

Love running no matter what season or weather.
Right now using 'ON RUNNING" Cloudflow think they've helped my speed. Now my weekly long runs are 6-7 miles - short runs 3.5. Most of my runs have some nice hills 14-16% grades on sections. I need to asses if I should attempt one more marathon and it's training... |

I started streaking after shoulder surgery in 2018 as a way to keep fit during my recovery. I loved every mile of it but stopped the streak after day 528. It consisted of a minimum of 1 mile per day, unbroken. Most days I hit 3 or 4 miles per run, and completed the 1st 365 days exceeding my goal of 1200 miles, and when I stopped the streak after day 528 I had 1604 miles under my belt.
During the last 3 months of the streak I got more into CrossFit, and eventually it took the priority over running every single day. I still run, but something had to give as I needed to begin looking at recovery days. It was the hardest decision I ever made, to stop the streak, but in the end it was the best decision too. I ran a 10 miler and a half marathon during the streak, and I'm registered for another half this April. Still running just not daily.

According to Runkeeper, after 2+ years of recording with that app, I set a PR yesterday in the 2-4 mile range. I probably have about 0 runs above 4 miles, so . . .
I put just over 200 miles on the shoes I got for Father's Day, started a new pair yesterday. I did the Santa 2 the Sea 5K last month, best 5K race time since my mid-20s. (53) |

I have logged 1500 miles in the last 6 months. I try to stay between 50 - 70 miles per week. Posted some great times this year with a 1:20 half marathon which was a PR and 2:51 Full Marathon. This year I'm going to work to reducing the half marathon down to 1:15 and my full marathon down to 2:40. This is also going to be my first year im going to attempt a double marathon coming in at about 53 miles with a target goal of running a 100 mile race by the end of the year. Super excited for this years race season, hoping to get in at least 10 - 15 races and hit some PRs.

My running muscle memory is looong gone, so I ride instead. For winter training, many riders use Zwift. Now Zwift has running options as well, if you run on a treadmill in nasty weather. They just added a 400m track option. Check it out.

I tried the ON Clouds, but they did not work for me. They are definitely stylish and light-weight. Just didn't work for my running form for whatever reason. Granted I pronate. I mainly use Asics Kayanos for daily/training miles. I just started using Saucony Fastwitch for racing. I was super happy with that shoe in the one race I ran in them. I'm looking forward to trying them for more this year!

I figured I'd start streaking this year and see how long it goes. I don't anticipate it will even be 31 days - 500+ is sick!! Anyone else?

I like how RK tells you the PRs, but it can be annoying as you've noticed. First time doing something automatically equals a PR. What's your name on RK?

I'm near Washington DC - the Marine Corps Marathon also has a 10K, but last year they just started an Ultra. Super fun and great scenery to run through!

So, RK keeps telling me that if I want to get faster in 5K range, I need to shorten my stride and has a training program to get there. A) I prefer to stretch out longer when I run straight distance. Soccer I take much shorter steps, but it's a different activity. B) I don't have headphones, and certainly not anything I want to wear for a run. At S2TS, I saw these bone-conduction sets. Anyone have good/bad to say about them? |

I wish I could still run. Too many injuries and surgeries for that. Now I just walk. But I do walk 6 to 9 miles every day (2 to 3 hours) not matter how hot or cold it is ( last winter I walked 2.5 hours in -28 F air temp / -45 wind chill). If you dress for it with layers, hand and foot warmers and a face mask and stocking cap it is not all that bad. Yes, that is a lot of miles to walk, well over 2,100 miles a year.

I run on the side. Main focus is lifting, although I feel I'm in decent running shape. Just checked my Garmin, had just over 500 miles running last year.
Garmin tracks my personal bests, I don't necessarily set many running goals. Best 5k: 22:30 Best 10k: 48:02 Farthest run: 6.31miles (I get bored running that long I'll be honest lol) |

I run in the summer when leaning up...but nothing like you guys. I typically set a time limit like 30 minutes...and go for what I can during that.
When I first start back running..I'm usually around 3 miles. By the time I'm as lean as I want...my best is probably around 4 miles. But I do it in HIIT fashion. Also...is it strange that I find running at an incline easier than an even surface? I'm on a treadmill...but maybe it's just how my body is setup?

Did about 1200 miles for 2019.
Fastest 5k was like 18 mins. I did a 25k at a 7:05 pace last year. Hoping to do that at 6:55 pace this year. I lift in the mornings and run 6 days a week. Yoga a couple days during the week. I just turned 40 and I am feeling great. Running is just part of my fitness routine so I can drink beer and lots of it on Saturday. |

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018XNGQOE/ They work quite well. My hearing isn't the best, and I'm certainly no audiophile, but for watching videos or listening to music quietly, they work very well. If you like lots of base or high volume, they're not the best. A few cyclists I know use these because they leave the ears open for other noise, like traffic, but I don't want any distractions while riding, so I don't use them on the bike.

I don't get people who run in the dark on a dark road with no reflective gear on, no lights and i'm suppose to see them?

I do tris, or at least I've done them in the past, and now just train for them. Love cycling, love/hate running, and hate swimming. |
