Recently moved to Colorado and I’m taking a break from Crossfit (because doing WOD’s at a mile above sea level blows)

I am currently running the 5/3/1 Powerlifting program. Here are the numbers from my last testing week:

Back Squat 325 x4
Bench press 250 x2
Deadlift 445 x3

Strict press.. lets not talk about it

I have lost ~ 15lbs in the last 2 months (down to 207lbs @13%bf) but haven't lost too much in strength. I am currently doing a Michael Matthews program. Strength day on Monday I was able to maintain close to what I was doing before I started my diet.

Flat Bench 3x5 @285lbs
Low bar squat 3x5 @335lbs
Deadlift 1x5 @425lbs (needed wrist wraps after all of my warm up sets... need to work on my grip)

edit: Since I have been using my voodoo floss and knee sleeves, all pain and popping has gone away. Great suggestions!

Great to hear flossing and knee sleeves working for you!

I’ll add my latest numbers....Body weight 180, unk bf I’m guessing about 10-12% pretty lean.

Deadlift - 3reps 430...will test 1rm in a week
Highbar BS - 3reps 395....will test 1rm in 10 days
Bench press - 3reps 250...will test 1rm in 2 weeks (shoulder injury has affected this drastically).
Front Squat - 3reps 315...will test 1rm in 2-3 weeks

Taking a break from Olympic lifts to let shoulder heal.

Note...I am also using Wendler 5/3/1 like DPump.
Have had great success with it over the years!

Just to pile on - I'm also using a modified Wendler 5/3/1 methodology. I my Wendler sets of 2 major movements, two days a week (Wed: DLs and SOHP; Sat: Squat and Bench) and do CrossFit two days a week, then try to get in a long-ish cardio session on Sundays.

Nice Hooligan! Alway good to here more ppl using the 5/3/1.

I also used Cory Gregory’s “Squat Everyday” program a while back. Made it 97 days before having to take a break. Shit worked tho!

As for Wendler....have you seen the Barbel Shrugged episode with him and Bledsoe and Chris Moore (RIP). They are in a hotel fitness room drinking whiskey talking shop. Absolutely hilarious and informative! Worth watching!!!

Wanna call bullshit, if you bench 500, your squat and dead would be 800lb range. Do you have one leg?

Why calm BS? Has he insulted you? That’s not very accommodating of a reply. Maybe at 6ft his leverage for squats is harder than others who are shorter.

I'm 6 ft as well. I agree sometimes that can happen but I've not seen someone powerful enough to bench 500 that doesnt sqaut and deadlift significantly more. Seems like a post by someone being funny that hasnt a clue.

Maybe Dinan-M can elaborate. Possible leg/knee injury? That would affect Squats and DLs but not Bench. Who knows. I will agree with 1MM....someone who can bench 500 will normally have high Squat and DL numbers, especially a powerlifter.

Adding to my list....
1rm Power Clean....225 (tested this other day)

*the only Olympic related lift I do now.

off topic but thigh size

anybody have problems buying pants because of thigh size. Seems a lot of stuff is slim and skinny, but even regular and relaxed fit jeans that fits my waist the thighs are too tight, and same for dress pants.

I'm sure I can look harder, but anybody having this problem. And my deadlifts and squats are all in the 200 - 260 pound range so I'm not even that big.

I'm new here, but will jump in. Best lifts at 5'7" and in the 200lb bw range. I have a shorter range of motion than a lot of guys, but I have genetics that are pretty good.

Bench - 405
Squat - 520 "ish"
D.L. - 505

I have had the pleasure of training with a guy for 10+ years that has won 6 world titles in 3 different weight classes, and probably 20+ national level championships in his sport. He trains like an animal, and benches in the 540's. So he is a lot stronger than me, but I found that is key to keeping me constantly pushing.

We are older (I'm 45), but I still hit the gym regularly at 4:00am each morning. Been doing this a long time. Figured out a long time ago that diet was pretty much key to everything.

Since getting older, I have turned my focus more on cardio related stuff and protecting my joints. I rarely go above 315 in the squat anymore....and 275 on bench. I just focus on increasing the reps at those weights.

I'm always in a perpetual bulk/cut state. I'm OCD about tracking calories, and I try to never let myself get above 12% b.f. when bulking which is about 205-210 lbs for me. I usually start cutting around 3 months out from beach weather, and I typically come in about 180-185lbs at a pretty low b.f.

My legs are actually my best body part.

Now this is an outlet for me. I have always been in the gym...my dad was too so I was raised around it. And I know I may get some BS calls about my statements, but here are some pics that show where I'm sitting at about right now vs. this past summer.

I don't compete, but have in the past once as my gym sponsors a Natural BB Show each year. Plus they also do the bench contest for St. Jude's that I typically do each year. I almost always end up in the 198lb weight class, and have won the last 4 years I entered. This last bench contest was probably my last one though as I developed a case of elbow tendonitis which has been bugging me ever since. Sucks as I have always been careful, and it's the first injury I have had in the 20+ years I have been training.

Always LOL.

It's the price we pay for what we do. Same with shirts. If I find anything that fits me nicely in the arms and shoulders, the mid-section is big enough to make me look pregnant!

Rmtt....good stuff. As an old guy it’s nice to see and hear your training regimen. I’m very similar, although a few years older and taller.
Are those numbers your bests as of currently? Or are they old numbers? You mentioned you do not train heavy anymore.

Myself and I believe 1moremod are posting our current 1rms.

Oh and welcome to the group!

Thanks guys.....those are probably my best 1 RM's. Crazy thing is I never knew what a knee wrap was until I was in the 365lb range. Had a guy at the gym asked me if I wrapped....I was like what is that. He showed me and my squat took off.

We currently are using a modified Wendler Split, so I haven't tested my 1rm. The program is an app on our phone, and it calculates workload every week based on what you did to figure out a 1 RM.

So my last bench workout was multiple sets of triples at 295Lbs, and then a back-off set of 275 lbs where you do as many reps as possible. I hit 11 reps...so my phone says my new 1RM is around 375lbs.

So the next "wave" it will load all my %'s around the newly calculated 1RM.

Honestly I haven't tried a true 1RM in about 12 months. That was the last time when I did the St. Judes's bench contest. I won my class with a 360lb bench, but I could have done more. I just picked the guy that had the heaviest attempts in my class, and stayed 10lbs ahead of him each lift.

Afterwards when my elbow started hurting, I figured I had been tempting fate long enough, and I wanted to start being more pro-active about my joints and cardiovascular health.

I'm a fitness nut....I get blood-work done multiple times a year, and I have a great sports doctor. So I'm constantly watching everything.

I refuse to believe that you still can't progress even at our ages! It's just a slower process.

I will make sure to stop in here more. I just joined because of the car I bought, but didn't realize there was a health section in it. I think I can be very helpful in some things as I have used a ton of OTC products for everything from general health to my progression in the gym. And I have data from a Dr. who I tell about everything I try and we actually test to see if things are doing what they really say they do. Some is subjective, but others really make an impact.

Also I apologize if I screwed up the intent of the thread. I just got excited. I will start posting current lifts as I progress, but they will be lower weights with more reps as I am chasing volume.

No worries brother, we like the enthusiasm!

I haven’t tried knee wraps as that’s more then I would need. However I do use Mark Bells STrong sleeves which I just replaced with his Extreme X knee sleeves. I am a High bar squatter. I stopped low Bar few years ago as it was bothering my back and hip. I also use a modified Wendler 531. What is this app you speak of??? I’m also a volume freak!
