RTV/Sealer on cylinder head

So I recently bought a 2008 535i. Massive oil leak into the spark plug terminals. After removing the valve cover gasket it looks to have RTV or gasket sealed on the cylinder head. In fear of debris falling would it be safe to just replace the gasket and leave the “sealer” they used? I’m fearful it will cause leaks with the new gasket.
