Driving from AZ to CA with firearms

Hey, this is question for anyone from Cali, Im travelling this time in a car and heading to orange county area. Ive already looked up some information and just need confirmation. It states I can carry a gun with less than 10 rounds, gun has to be unloaded and placed in lock box in trunk. I have a handgun I can carry, but how about my Daniel Defense MK18 its considered a pistol, I can get a 10 round mag but not sure if that gun is allowed.

Trigger lock/barrel lock. Make SURE the case is locked. Nephew is still waiting for dismissal of chicken-sh*t charge of "readily accessible" weapon because the lock wasn't on the case. They originally upped the ante to felony because he drove by a school on his way to his house.

NOT legal advice, only anecdotal.

Man you can never be too prepared. Space aliens, angry immigrants, oppressive government and vegans can all be looked after if properly prepared.

Be safe bro.

Maybe a nice 870 wouldn't be of such concern.

Honestly I would call a local gun shop. I know MK18s are legal in california as a general statement (80% lower), however there are some features that you might have that put it out compliance. I can't definitively tell what those are because I've been out of the game for a while.

Better call someone about that MK18 or you could face some trouble crossing State lines with that. California laws are STRICT on anything let alone something that even remotely resembles a AR15. Right now, the laws just changed again so better safe than sorry.

All I know is NJ would definitely arrest you for possessing an AR-style pistol.

Check on the hand gun as well, I think gun and ammo have to be separate when locked up, not just unloaded but not in same container either.

Penal Code Section 12026.2 states that carrying a handgun in your car even in a locked container is only for the purpose of transporting from one specific location to another (going to the range, going hunting, etc.). It is illegal to carry a firearm without a permit, even in a locked container in your car, for general purposes such as self-defense.

I read the title and chuckled, at least you're going to Orange County and not some of the worse parts of the state for gun ownership.

I would not risk carrying without getting a permit in this state. Luckily they have been handing them out much more liberally in Orange County than pretty much everywhere else in California. The whole "locked container" thing in California doesn't really work anymore. As of recently I believe they passed a bill where you cannot have a firearm in your vehicle unless you are going to or from a range, shop, or smith. You can not carry a firearm in your vehicle for "general purposes" or "self-defense", it has to be for a lawful purpose like in the previous examples I laid out. Additionally you would have to have the ammunition locked as well, in a separate container in the vehicles.

If I didn't have a CCW(not saying I do or don't) I would not risk it in the slightest, not worth it. When you get here put in your application for a CCW in Orange County ASAP if you feel you need to carry, which you should. Not a dangerous place, but a good practice for responsible individuals to participate in.

As to your MK18 that you lost in a boating accident after you disassembled it and stored in your safe, that's too bad. If you did still have it and it was an 80% lower, I would let you know that you cannot have/produce 80% lower built weapons without obtaining and applying a serial number from CA DOJ to the lower receiver in California. Additionally, I would have also informed you of the fact that they recently passed a bill that prohibits many features and accessories on these types of weapons.

Are you visiting or moving here? If you're visiting, why pack that kind of firepower for a vacation? If you're moving here, put in a CCW application as others have mentioned.

Also, I doubt you'll get noticed by any police unless your car is very conspicuous... tinted windows and modifications usually draw police attention.

Last I read CA doesn't honor any other states permits, you have to apply and have their permit before hauling any weapon anywhere in the state, and last I knew, they don't like out of state people carrying anything. They hate law abiding citizens and ignore criminals. That's why I moved and my kids are considering it.

Where are you getting your information from? I never heard about the whole lock container where you can't just leave it in your vehicle.

Also, ammunition can be carried in the same locked container as the gun.

Calguns foundation:

Other than 'not in the gun', there are NO regulations on transporting ammunition. Ammunition may be carried in that locked container, in magazines or speed loaders, anywhere in a vehicle, so long as no ammunition is actually in the gun.

The ammunition must be kept in a separate container. All weapons must also be unloaded while they are in a vehicle, even when they are inside a locked container.

People have been charged already for both of these violations. I don't certainly agree with them but it's best to be informed. Just go apply for your CCP it's a very easy process and most people can have a valid reason for being granted one.

Tell those jokes to cops while you have those firearms in the car (including trunk). You will need someone to bail you out soon after. Just leave them at home unless you are looking for trouble in CA.

These two codes have long been in CA. Not sure why people have no clue or argue about them. Again OP, suggest you leave the firearms at home when you are traveling to any part of CA.

It's much easier if you're in LE, LEOSA allows it federally, even in US Territories! I know of someone who frequently checks his service pistol on his trips to Puerto Rico. No questions asked!
