The school had two brand new ones, along with two cabled color cameras. There was no budget left for tapes for student projects, hence the state grant for four tapes ($200 total). I had to lug the bigger VHS deck about 45 minutes away to the cable company's TV studio every Thursday afternoon, to dub the week's school news productions from VHS onto 3/4" so they could air them. Think of how easy life would have been if we had a stinking iPhone back then!

Absolutely! The B&W reel-to-reel VTR and cabled camera that I inherited from before the color VHS stuff was actually top-threading. Oh, and all of it was manual tracking knobs only to align the heads between different tapes.

Here's a snippet from a text thread with the woman I met for lunch last Saturday. She and some fellow parents of high schoolers are discussing a Coronavirus-motivated "Plan B," having booked a cruise for them and their kids for Spring Break.

Side note: who the fuck under the age of 80 books cruises? And...for high school kids' Spring Break? Why not go balls-out and book a stay at an Amish farm and live on the edge, for fuck's sake?

So I try to inject some playfulness and humor by suggesting a trip to Minot ND. Everyone in the Midwest knows that to be pretty much the end of the earth and would find the suggestion of a trip there to be funny, especially in this bleak time of year. Yeah...not this terminally geeky, dour lass.

I never have used a VHS at home actually, I really don't recall us having the player for it either. I know we have hella tapes somewhere but I was basically a CD kid. At school though we had tapes and the yellow school bus/goosebumps stuff was such a treat

Oh, she was serious alright. I don't think there's anything she's not deadly serious about.

She's a PK. That is, a "Preacher's Kid." It's "a thing" which I had no knowledge of until I dated a Protestant woman, having grown up Catholic. Along with "MK's" which are "Missionaries' Kids." I won't delve into the psychological dynamics of it; you can research it on your own.

I was born in 1990, but I remember the days before cell phones. I remember us having a Windows 95 PC being a huge thing. I remember VHS tapes, phones with cords, pay phones, and we even had one of those rotary dial phones. My weekend fun vehicle is a '98 Jeep Wrangler, and up until a few weeks ago it had the original cassette player in it. It made for good conversation on dates lol.
