In love with the 15400 and the ROO safari!! Love them! But my first Ap will likely be the 15400. In due time.

How's the depreciation on these bad boys?
The second one is the lebron James edition. One of my favorites. The special editions usually hold their value very well. The rest of the models don't depreciate too much. Based on how well you can negotiate or how well of a relationship you have with your dealer you should just buy them new versus used some of the times.

Well for the first one (ROO rose gold ceramic) I got quoted roughly $37k usd with a 3-4 month lead time from a friend in the business. Is that too much? I don't take depreciation too lightly and wouldn't mind used in good condition.

Can't find the LBJ ones but I'm assuming around $57k+. I love the LBJs but my wife disagrees. Plus we haven't even seen it in person yet. Kind of hard to pull the trigger on something at this price without seeing it in person. I really prefer this one as the production year is my son's birth year and I'm a huge LBJ fan, like MEGA huge and I see it appreciating as his career progresses even more.

What's your take on the best way to see/buy the LBJs.

I think people like it because it's expensive so think they should. I'd rather buy a car.

Well, that depends on where and to whom one attempts to sell it. Like most high quality personal effects one might buy with one's disposable income, they are made to last for the original buyer more so than they are made to be sold. If the depreciation on them bothers you, my suggestion is that you rent one for however long you want to wear it rather than buy it outright. By renting, you won't suffer whatever be the ill effects of the item's depreciating over time.

All the best.

P.S.
Why is it that people want to apply the concept of depreciation to things that are clearly expense items and not depreciable assets? (http://financial-dictionary.thefreed...reciable+Asset)

Thanks but the concept of renting a watch is very new to me. I never knew you could do that but in general, i'm very against renting ie lease cars or house rental. I'd rather be more picky with my purchases and minimize my loses by buying used or choosing not to get it at all if depreciation is extreme.

I'm new to this watch game so bare with me. I really like the Lebrons but it seems that i love cars a lot more than I do with what's on a wrist. At the end, I don't think I'm a watch wearer or will I ever in the future regardless of the cost/value of the watch. Just don't like accessories on my body ie rings, watches, necklaces, earrings etc. I'm married and I rarely even wear my wedding ring but these two weeks researching/learning about watches have given me a more rounded idea of what timepieces are all about.

That's perfectly reasonable as well as understandable. I think no matter how nice a watch be, if one doesn't like wearing "stuff," none of them will be "nice enough." Nothing wrong with that.

FWIW:
I avoid depreciation issues with my "stuff" using one of two strategies, depending on the item:
  • Keep it for the entirety of its useful life. I do that with cars. The last one I got rid of I kept for 14 years. It wasn't broke; I didn't "fix" (replace) it. I got rid of it largely because I just wanted something different.
  • Keep it forever. That's what I do with watches, entertainment equipment, and a host of other stuff (furniture, silverware, art, clothing/shoes -- I work out too, so my body size doesn't change much, and damn near anything else that isn't broken/worn out -- regardless of what I pay for them.
About the only class of goods for which those approaches hasn't worked is computers and cell phones. To some extent televisions fall into that category, although I still have a few CRT televisions in my vacation homes.

Call it what you will. I simply describe it as my being cheap. LOL

All the best.

With the combined creative genus of Guess watches AND Diesel watches, the AP ROO is marketed to that niche market of oodles of new money and not much sense. Enjoy.

Here's your Corona Light, Sir.

Really? I have several things you may want to buy too then.

Enjoy your watch.

I just love watches.
The ROO in my collection is the classic black dial, steel case, rubber strap one and the combo is classic.
Btw, I don't usually wear two watches on my wrist, it's for comparison

I respect everyone's individual tastes, but feel that the #yolo crowd on Instagram and other social media outlets have ruined watches such as the AP.

??? Sorry. I'm a "dinosaur." My idea of "social media" is invitations to a party one's hosting, or perhaps a sign that says "Valet Parking."

What is the "#yolo" crowd? That is, what characterizes them such that they have ruined Audemar's Piguet's watches and how have the accomplished that feat?

All the best.

not 100% there yet. AP is relatively an unknown brand by many.

Fair question. If you look on Facebook, and Instagram especially, there are a lot people who like to show off their supposed success. Most of it is daddy's money of course, but what's the fun in telling everyone that. I call them narcissists. It might be better just to show you a photo rather than try to explain it:
