Nissan has had it since 2011.

And Nissan has a backup noise, that as far as I am aware, Tesla doesn't have.

Mama always told me to look both ways before crossing the road.

I drive some Leafs and Bolts at work and they make a slight sound while driving. It really helps when I am going up and down the parking garage and there are people walking and not paying attention.

IMO it should be louder.

I am not sure if it going to help.

The law is "Pedestrian have the right of way at anytime".
So, even if you are going at 40mph and someone stepped on the road to cross while you are only 1 foot away, you are always at fault for not stopping and let the pedestrian cross.

Now, another scenario. Car running catless and aftermarket muffler, which it can be heard from inside a well insulated cabin.
People will still walk or cross in front of you and stare at you just because you honk at them to let them know that you are there behind them waiting patiently for them to make up their mind whether to cross the parking lot or just walk in the middle of the parking lot.

Rant over.

IF they walk in front of me illegally, they'll get 100% from my German horn.

It will only be a short time before BMWs all over the South will be driving around sounding like the horn on the General Lee!

This has been talked about for years, as the electric cars started to appear. About 10 years ago there was speculation in the magazines about cars being customizable and maybe sounding like crickets or some kind of natural world sound. But some years back NHTSA decided that only a narrow range of sounds that the population can learn to identify as a "car" will be allowed. I'm kind of surprised that Tesla went this long without doing the pedestrian alert.

This "feature" has been talked about for years. It's a way to protect us from our inattentive selves.

Read: look both ways when crossing the street, kids.
Actually the primary stated reason is for the visually impaired, not people that don't pay attention, at least in the US and UK. The EU wording was unclear, however.

Looks like they weren't legally required to yet: "The regulation requires full compliance in September 2020, but 50% of "quiet" vehicles must have the warning sounds by September 2019."

Was on a marked pedestrian crossing that is located close to the end of each aisle, where sightlines around each corner are obscured by walls. I wasn’t on my phone or anything. It would have helped if the dude wasn’t going 25-30 mph in a parking garage, but we’ve all learned to listen if you can’t fully see around something like a corner.

I don’t disagree that pedestrian attentiveness is crucial. But this is a shared responsibility with motorists, and people on both sides can be idiots. So my point is that ensuring EV’s are not completely silent is a good idea irrespective of what pedestrians are supposed to do.

I've had the parking lot experience also where a silent car was coming down the one way lane the wrong way and I wasn't looking in the opposite direction.

Keep in mind that in a bicycle in windy conditions it can be impossible to hear the current silent electric cars, and it can be involuntarily startling (ive had that experience too) and some riders could fall over from the jump scare.

+1

I actually worry about that when I am driving in electric mode. I certainly don't want a collision on my part.
