late to the thread but whatever

I did laser eye surgery 5-6yrs ago and it was the best thing I ever did and everyone I know who did it after me has said the same thing

if you are elligible, then I say go for it..
15mins in and out and I gave them a hard time because I am squeamish when they wanted to touch my eye

It stays forever. You are reshaping your cornea, which actually makes up 2/3 of your eyes focusing power. But, eyes always have the potential to change and you could become more myopic or hyperopic and you will still probably need reading glasses ~40 when you become presbyopic.

JayKay - I know you're out here in the Phoenix area...

Any recommended places? A couple of years ago I went to a Lasik Vision Institute location and went through all of the tests for the custom wavefront lasik and they said I am a prime candidate for 15/15 or 15/20 vision.

Then I read/watched a couple 'oops the flap disintegrated' stories/videos and got cold feet - lol.

very true

You shouldn't get drunk IMO.. you need to be able to sit still and not move

they do give you a relaxer though

my eyes were really bad

took 3 days before I could see using strong sunglasses

another week before I could go outside (with strong sunglasses)

about a month before i could easily read and see stuff on a screen (impossible before)

otherwise, my problems prior to surgery are still present minus the lack of vision.
problems meaning strong photo-phobia and excessive dryness in the eye.

but I am very happy i did it
I can see very very well and farther than I could even when I wore glasses.

my surgery was about 5 minutes i think

I actually have a video if anyone is interested.. lol

Quit being a pussy. It takes a few minutes. Its painless. You dont really see anything but a blur. They'll give you some shit to calm the nerves. You'll leave seeing better than you walked in the door.

You can't be knocked out. They need you awake for a reason (ask the ophthalmologist to explain).

Bell's Phenomenon. It occurs with most people. When you close your eyes, they roll back, for protection.

^ I'm sure it didn't hurt. But watching that surgery was torture in itself. Made me cringe inside.

I sat in and watched a full procedure. Not that big a deal. Watch a cataract surgery. Thats fun.

The above is exactly how my surgery was, except they used a laser to create the corneal flaps instead of the microkeratome. It's really not that bad at all. They gave me a valium before getting started, but I don't think I really needed it. The worst part of the surgery is when they apply suction to the eye before and during the cutting of the corneal flap. That part is kind of spooky, because I felt a heavy pressure on my eye, like something is almost crushing it. It's just a matter of relaxing, letting go, and putting trust in the surgeon. After that it's fine.

My vision became clearer the moment the laser finished its work. The surgeon hadn't even replaced the flap yet and I could already tell a big difference.

Getting surgery done on your eyes just seems scary to me. I had a huge eye phobia. Wouldn't even consider using contacts until recent year or two. I only recently am able to use eye drops too; only got better at eye drops because of contacts.
