Average Person 40 yard dash challenge!

Slow day at work forgive me. A couple of us were talking about sprinting and 40 yard dashes. Somewhat of a ego contest until we ran it. Just curious what you can go outside and do in your work clothes. While both of us are athletic, i'll admit while we had the distance down neither one of us are pro stopwatchers so i'd assume an error of margin in anyones posted time.

Its 27 degrees here today.

Post your time if you want to play along.

Guy 1 (not me): Age 35 5'7" 177lbs ran 4.5
Guy 2 (me): Age 33 6'4" 248lbs ran 4.7

PS. I pulled my hamstring on a minor level

I find this to be awesomely funny, and just the kind of silly shit I would do when I was younger. I've got about ten years on you guys, and while I go running a few times a week, even the thought of sprinting in work shoes at my age would be insane. Thanks for the laugh.

This is hilarious. Hopefully it will catch on and others will start posting times. I could have told you that you or the other guy would have broken something. Only teenagers and 20 somethings can get away with this kind of foolishness without injury.

By the way, if those times are accurate, nice job.

4.5 240lbs 28 years old. I'm the heaviest I've ever been right now and it definitely shows. 4.3 all day ten years ago.

I call BS on some of these times. The fastest guys in NFL history haven't cracked 4.2 and I believe the fastest time at the scouting combines this year was either a high 4.2 or 4.3, and you're saying in street clothes and work shoes a 35 yr. old did a 4.5. That's either incredible or impressive.

Definitely unlikely, but he did say it probably was't accurate ;-)

Actually, the 4.7 time at that size is much more impressive. That is about the size of a TE coming into the league, and in fact, would of been one of the best times in this years draft at that position.

The 35 year old is a bit of a freak in terms of running speeds. I've seen him footrace a number of different people and he can easily beat guys 10 years his younger. One guy fell flat on his face after golf league one night trying.

Speculation for error i'd assume somewhere in the .25 seconds or 2.5 tenths region.

My hamstring is still very sore from the light pull.

Just for fun reference there is a clip of Roger Goodell running a 5.5x in his office in socks on youtube.

I'm calling horse shit on those times as well. The majority of normally "athletic" guys are in the upper 4's to lower 5 range. Certainly nowhere near a 4.3 -- haha -- that's some funny shit to think you can do that. That's world class speed man. Anyways, a 4.6, is considered fast and I'm sure you guys aren't doing that either.

Lets take some videos and post them -- I gotta see this.

Hand time is never accurate. You need too add a half second at the min. These times are NFL fast and unless you were a track star or incredibly gifted no way and 21years old and practicing daily.

Lol I don't mind posting a video. I'm not in work clothes today's my day off. Like I said I was running a 4.3 as senior in high school running the 100 in 10.7. You must be from a state with incredibly slow people here in California everyone's fast. Sucks that I ran a10.7 just at the district level finals and got fourth place.

I spoke with Guy #1 and we both have no problem doing a video. We've got a golf trip to Kentucky in Mid April. We'll mark up a course and timing crew with two stop watches. To be continued...

And yes all my highschool times were hand timed which are faster than electronic.

Also interested in seeing a video. NFL prospects in the top condition of their life vs. guys stopping by in street clothes before heading to Wendy's for lunch. Would make for a good show.

From 2008-2012 Combine average - Wide Receiver and Cornerback ran a 4.55.
Slowest groups Offensive Tackle 5.32 and Offensive Guard 5.36.

Like a couple people said you are comparing an electronic professional timing system. To some one holding a stop watch and starting on your movement. But the guy in the thread who said 1 second should be added on to a hand clocked time that guy is obviously in the wrong thread.

kprocivic & mtecnic > Oh how I love those high-school times. I ran a 4.1 dawg. LMAO! Look -- I'm not completely discrediting you guys. I'm not from a slow state(FL) or city (Miami), for that matter. I ran track and played football in high-school, just like you guys. I'm not slow by any means, but didn't pursue athletics beyond high-school. A few of my friends however, did play college football and soccer. I've been around fast people all my life and have a pretty realistic understanding of what those numbers actually mean.

The point is, that your name is not "Willie Fucking Gault" -- which at 48 -- was still posting up 10's in the 100m. Read this > http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=li-gault050109

Had you really ran a (4.3) in the 40 or (10.7) in the 100m -- as you claim -- you're in a very (and I mean very) small percentile. Specifically with the 40 time. If you we're actually that fast, and knew about it...and if your coaches knew about it...we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I'm sure you're fast, but put up some real "good quality" videos. Don't be one of those dudes, that's like "bro, my 135i can take GTR's", then never throws up a video. Or throws up a shitty video which no one can distinguish

If you guy's run a sub 5.0 -- I'll be impressed.

Don't worry, i'll be just as happy as you after we've got it on video. I mentioned multiple times that there should be a +/- for error control. I'd be happy even if it was closer to 5 plus or minus.

Wasn't trying to start any arguments about any of this just posted our observed results for some fun.

I’m not sure why anyone is being a douche about this as you never claimed these were official times (in fact, quite the contrary).

To answer your question, anything under 5.0 on a laser is fast for the average person, anything under 4.8 is pretty fast for a college athlete, and anything under 4.6 is d*** fast for anyone. Personal opinion, obviously.

I am a former college baseball player and used to powerlift competitively. I saw this sort of thing all the time. There’s always that one dad that wants to brag about his son, and I usually just nod my head and smile.

In high school, I supposedly ran a 4.71 at 5’10” and 215lbs. In college, I ran a 4.88 on a laser (on a track but without track shoes) and was very happy with that.

In the weight room, I could bench 355, but in competition (you have to pause the weight on your chest) I could never do more than 315.

At a Pittsburgh Pirates combine, I once hit 91mph from the outfield with a crow hop (Although that was on a Stalker radar gun which is pretty accurate). However, on the mound I was consistently 82-84mph through 6+ innings.

I could claim a ran a 4.7, benched 355, and threw 91, and technically I wouldn’t be lying.

However, it would be more realistic to say that I ran a 4.9, benched 315lbs, and threw 83mph.

My point is: While some of these claims may technically be true, there is always more to every story.
