This is a long one, but I've got a real scumbag boss firing/laid-off story.

I had worked for a company for over 20 year and was in a position where I had a very good rapport with people from the lowest levels of the company up to the Owner/CEO (public company that really isn’t public due to preferred stocks).

Around year 17 or 18 I got a new VP who had a real issue with anyone that his superiors would go to instead of him (he was also a short guy with a bit of a Napoleon complex). The President and SVP of Engineering, both of whom I had worked with for more than 15 years, always wanted me at their staff meetings and would regularly ask me about the status of things rather than my VP.

This VP had already chased out or tried to fire a couple of other company long timers and got quite pissed off when other departments made sure they had positions. I was the last of his targets. So he started fabricating things about me so that he could write me up and keep me from being eligible to transfer to another position (as he knew I was actively being recruited to move back to Engineering).

At about the 20.5 year mark in my time with the company I had a heart attack and was diagnosed as diabetic. I will be completely honest that after this my attitude towards my home/work balance shifted dramatically and I was getting tired of all the BS I had to put up with from him.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I had the audacity to call in saying I would be taking the day off because we’d had a heavy snow that morning. Keep in mind that this was only two months after my heart attack and shoveling snow was a big no no for me. The big issue is that he was off that day and had as always designated his back-up. Thus I informed my boss’s admin and his designated back-up that I would not be coming in. Because I did not contact my boss, when he was out of the office and had designated a back-up, he decided this was a case of no call/no show. To top it off, the day he decided to let me go I had to leave early as I had a migraine. So instead of waiting until I came back to the office, he decided to let me go over the phone. He also decided he was going to tell HR to put me on the not eligible for re-hire list.

Honestly I didn’t care and didn't bother to debate any of it. I had been ready to leave the company for a while, but just hadn’t bother to do any job searching.

To top it off, he tried to tell the state that I was not eligible for unemployment because it was a case of no call/no show. I easily won that appeal, although I did not collect a single unemployment check before I had a new job with the company’s primary competitor who I have been with for going on 13 years now.

I was only fired once. I was only at this company like 2.5 years but it feels like one of the longest because when I started there were only a handful of people in a small office and when I was fired they had a bunch of people a had bought a giant building. I worked in the marketing dept which was basically separate from the rest of the company. I was friends with pretty much everyone in marketing.

Before my firing storying I will tell two others from the same company. Because of the nature of this company it was full of bros if you know what I mean. Pretty sure a lot of them were on the juice also. When I started there was no HR or anything like that. However they soon hired some HR people and I recall one of the first things they did. We were in a portion of a smallish office building. There was only one entrance so at 9am on the dot they would have HR lock the door. So if you were 5min late you would have to ring the bell and have HR come open it and scold you for being a horrible human being.

Anyways my first boss at this company had some major roid rage issues. Luckily he was only my boss for a short time before they put me under someone else (more on him later). Anyways one day we are all working and hear a loud bang and like an explosion or something. We come to find out my original boss was talking to someone on his blackberry (thats what we had back then) and got pissed off, threw it against the wall and it blew up. Fired.

Another story is this "chemist" guy they had hired to create new products for the company. The first office was almost like H shaped with two offices connected by a kitchen/eating area in the middle. Anyways the chemist would use this kitchen to cook up his creations. Sometimes we would come in to work and we couldn't open our eyes because they would burn. Then chemist would come out of the kitchen in full gas mask and shit. We are just standing there like.

Anyways he was also the official toilet unclogger. With all these juiced up bros the toilets would back up a lot. Chemist would go in there with some special powder he mixed up and unclog them in no time. Guy was apparently super smart, dual phd... until he disappeared one day. Word on the street was he got his phds from the university of Photoshop.

Now for my story. At this point I was working for the marketing director. Nice guy, we were friends, but guy had no balls at all. He was basically a glorified graphic designer who became marketing director because he just happened to be the guy there and friends with the owners. Anyways I recall the day before I got canned me and my team were in the office until late, maybe like 8pm trying to launch something they wanted. My boss was in Vegas for an event (we were in FL). Anyways the next day I had a dr or dentist appointment and it ran late. So I was late for work. I don't remember how much, not that much, maybe 15min maybe 30 definitely less than an hour.

Typically I would call my boss to let him know. Since he was in vegas and it would be like 6am or something there I did not. Mind you, no one is waiting on me or counting on me for anything. I don't have any meetings scheduled, literally no one would know or care if I was there or not. However as I'm walking in one of the owners saw me. Apparently he called my boss and complained to him.

So when my boss called me and started complaining about it I don't recall exactly what I said, but I do recall ripping him a new asshole for being a little bitch who didn't have the balls to stand up for his team (more to it than just this event). Anyways whatever I said I recall knowing I was done after that call. They called me to HR a little while later.

I will say it has always been for the better. I have only been fired that one time, but was also laid off once and quit a few times and have always ended up better than before. At that company shortly after I was fired a lot of people started getting fired or quitting. Eventually people started getting pay cuts and/or hour cuts and the company was sold. Maybe like a year or two after I was fired almost no one I knew was left.

A friend and past employee of mine, a woman, went to work for a large, successful tech company in the Bay Area. She had stayed in touch with me over the years for job advice and for me to be a reference for her.

One day she called me to ask my advice about her new boss at this large, successful tech company. He, according to her, had been acting inappropriately at the office and at company off-site functions for some time. She and other females had complained to HR about this guy but nothing ever happened. According to my friend, this guy just kept doing what he was doing with no consequences.

Then one day after COVID hit, he held a Zoom meeting. During that meeting, he had inadvertently shared his screen with the group and on it was very graphic porn videos running. He quickly realized his error and took his screen offline.

His problem is that he had recorded the meeting. My friend called me to ask for advice on what to do. I suggested that she let HR know about the situation and have them demand to see the recording. (She and some of the other women on the Zoom call captured screen shots so they had him even if he had tried to delete the recording.

Next day, he was escorted out of his office to cheers from from the women who worked for him.

Early in my career, I landed a job running a division of large building supply manufacturer/distributor. My boss was the owner of the company, a guy who had inherited the company from his father, the founder.

The owner hired me because of my industry background, track record, and education. He was trying to step up the direction of the company and he was convinced I was the guy to help him do it.

Things went well at first. I could do no wrong. We had a new division under construction and he chose me to get it completed, open it, and run it. I was young and ambitious and said YES to the offer.

I was told by the long term employees that my honeymoon would end sometime. They told me every single person who came in before me to help bring the company into the 21st century had been loved and then he'd fire them! I thought, this can't happen to me. I'm really doing well and the my division is hitting it out of the park. I had one bad apple he had assigned to me from another location (after he had agreed to let me pick my own staff). This guy was trying his best to go against new ideas that I had because he couldn't deal with change and he was used to being the expert. I told the owner the disruption this bad apple was causing and I asked him to reassign this guy to another location. The next day, he fired me out of the blue.

I was in shock at first. But, I was young and did not understand how things work. I shook it off and landed a great job in a matter of weeks. My salary was way higher and in a great industry where I would spend the next 30 years.

Now for the fun part: Years later my old boss/owner who had fired me called me on the phone and asked me to go to lunch with him next time I was in town. So, I bit the bullet and scheduled lunch. I met him at his corporate offices. While I was waiting, the guy who took over for me at the division was just leaving his office. He walked up to me and said thank you! I said, "for what?" He told me innovative plans I had put in place for the division were spot on and he was now running the whole company and had implemented my ideas throughout the company. Then, I had lunch with the owner and he told me the same thing! I really did not see this coming. Anyway, I ended up being an outside consultant to the owner for years. I'm retired now and this old boss is now in his 80s. But, we still go to lunch from time to time and talk about the old days.

We have offices in US and Canada and it's a million times easier to let people go in the US states we are in (Michigan/Kansas/Illinois).

I've only really been laid off but thankfully ended up in a better job with in two weeks both times.

Ive done some dramatic quitting in my time and probably my favorite story (because of the outcome) is when I wasn't "allowed to quit" in the 11th hour but otherwise Ive been really lucky.

The best firing I know of is adjacent to a dramatic quitting. A real greaseball ran my department at office max when I was a teen, crooked as a russian, lecherous to the women, even looked like a failed 70s porn star. I despised the guy and tried to get him run off multiple times only to be ignored. I got another job and quit while the district manager was in doing an audit. Did the scene from Half Baked. Left. Then my coworker who stayed told me 3 days later popo came in and started searching the computers at the store, etc. Guess my old manager was an aspiring chomo and was probably pulling his pud in the office on company time. Store was closed for 3 days during the investigation, he was fired, two office computers were confiscated, the store manager apparently canned, etc.

Oh well, shoulda listened to the 17 year old computer sales guy...

Do you work in HR?

They tend to think things are always rosy and sunshine, but everyone else in the company usually has a different opinion.

Also not every company has a good HR policy or even follow the policy if they have one.

I was laid off 2 weeks after my divorce was finalized. At least I got a 5 figure severance after taxes.

Any correlation in the lay off, divorce and high severance?

Never been fired or laid off but I've fired and laid off plenty in my 25 years of managing people. Lots of criers, people screaming and yelling at me, bargaining, throwing co-workers under the bus. But there's one that tops ALL of them. We'll call her "Kelly"; forever known amongst our management team as "Crazy Kelly." I wont get into the details of what lead up to the firing as they actually aren't all that interesting. Basic stuff like being late, leaving early, and blaming others for her screw ups.

So first of all it took literally 2 months to fire her. Was supposed to be just before Thanksgiving. Had it all planned for the Wednesday before and she F'ing calls in sick. OK, change of plans, we will do it right after Thanksgiving. We get back from break and the morning of the firing she calls in that her grandfather just died. She's taking PTO and traveling to Chicago for the funeral. Wont be back till mid December. Comes back mid December and we're like, shit, we cant be dicks and fire her right before Christmas. So we agree, it's Jan 2, as soon as we are back to work.

We knew terminating Crazy Kelly (I'll call her CK) would likely be disruptive so we hatched a plan to do it off site. We worked in a 10 floor downtown office building and our company had the entire 2nd floor. On the 5th floor were some conference rooms that any company in the building could reserve. So we reserved one thinking we are 3 floors away from the office so this should be quick and easy to fire her and shove her out the door. Company policy is the direct manager, that manager's boss, and HR present in the room for all terminations. So in this case I'm the top level manager and my direct report Brian was CK's direct manager. Brian and I are already up in the 5th floor conference room. HR is waiting in the office to intercept her in the hall as soon as she pops out of the elevator. Classic CK is 45 minutes late so we are all just sitting around like assholes. HR has been posted up at the elevator for 45 minutes as employees are arriving so everyone now knows something is up.

HR finally intercepts CK and gets her into the 5th floor conference room. CK smells trouble. As soon as she gets in the room and sees me and Brian she starts in "NO, NO! What is this? No! You cant do this? What did I do, it wasnt me. it was all Kevin's fault. Blah blah blah." Poor Brian's never fired anyone so he's trying to go down the checklist of what to say, handing her the termination packet, talking about when benefits would end. All the while CK is a lump on the floor under the table sobbing. The HR manager who is literally the nicest old lady you'll ever meet finally had enough. After about 30 minutes of this shit she's like "CK, there's nothing you can do. The decision is made. it's time to pick yourself up and leave. Let's go NOW."

We get CK down to the building lobby and are moving her out to the street. There's a small breezway off the street. Big glass double doors to the street, 10 feet of carpet, then another set of double doors to take you into the lobby. CK collapses in a lump in the breezway and aint moving. She's hysterical, crying, screaming, tears and snot flowing. She's a wreck. Employees are coming in the doors off the street and literally having to step over her. Our plan was to get her out on the street and point her to the bus stop. What's our liability here if she wanders crying into the street and gets hit and killed? She's unable to take care of herself at this point. I call the company lawyer.

"DONT TOUCH HER!!! NO ONE BUT BETTY (HR manager) TOUCHES HER! UNDERSTAND?! The last thing we need is CK claiming you or Brian grabbed her tits when she was on the floor." Lawyer confirms it's not a good look to send an emotionally fragile, now ex-employee, out onto the downtown Seattle streets in 30 degree weather, locking the door behind her. "You're going to have to take her home. Go with Betty, get an Uber, and escort her home." Shit.

I call an Uber and Betty gets CK out onto the sidewalk. She literally crawls on hands and knees out the building and onto the sidewalk. Uber pulls up and I run over to the driver. "Hey, so here's the deal. This is gunna get weird. See that older lady over there and the girl on the ground? That's our HR manager. I'm her boss. And the chick on the ground just got fired. She's a mess and we are ALL jumping in your car to take her home safely. You up for this? Uber driver was cool with it so he waits as betty loads CK up. Ever seen those videos of a cat above a sink of water not wanting a bath where it shoots its legs out and tries not to get stuffed into the sink? That was CK. I dont know how Betty did it or what she said exactly but after what seemed like 5 minutes she finally got CK in the car. They sat in back and I sat strategically up front, clear of any possible accusations of ass grabbing. What followed was 30 of the longest minutes of my life. The Uber driver and I sat in silence as CK oscillated between sobbing, cursing, and repeating "Why, i just want to know why."

We get to CKs rental house and of course there's 2 flights of stairs to get her up to the door. The Uber driver was cool and waited for us. We get CK to the doorstep and and she collapses again. She cant find her keys. She's a mess. Finally finds her keys and hands them to Betty. The lock is sticky and Betty cant get the door open. We are shaking and pounding on the door, desperate to get it open, throw CK inside and walk away forever. We are making a Hell of a racket. Thankfully no one is home. Or so we thought. I finally get the key to work, throw the door open, and there's CK's young female roommate in a towel. Fresh out of the shower. She's on the phone with 911 because clearly some man is trying to break into her house and murder her. She hadnt seen CK through the peephole because she was still being a worthless lump on the ground. Betty must have been crouched down comforting her when she looked out so all she saw was me.

The roommate turned out to be very understanding and assured 911 it was all a misunderstanding. We got CK inside and the roommate agreed to take ownership of her. As we are turning to leave a police cruiser shows up. Apparently calling 911 in a panic then saying "oh yeah, nevermind" is cause for concern so they come anyway. Betty and I explained the situation then waited with the poor Uber guy and a 2nd cop while the first cop confirmed the story with the roommate. All was confirmed and we were on our way.

Heard through the grapevine that CK spent about a week in the hospital after that. Never hear from her or saw her again.

Yeah there's more but I realized it was going to be a long post already without going into the details of what lead up to it.

A few weeks before we decided to terminate her the cops showed up to serve her a restraining order filed by her boyfriend. LOL. It was a shit show. She refused to come out to the lobby to get served and because it's private property the cops were hesitant to just come in. So there was this silly back and forth of me running back to her desk trying to coax her to come out, then back to the cops to say "I'm sorry but she won't budge and she's telling me she doesn't want you guys in there and I need to protect her from you illegally entering the property."

The cops finally said "look, we know she's in there because you confirmed it. So we are going to hand you the documents to give to her and trust you'll do that. If she chooses to ignore them she will be held in contempt of court and we will come back with an arrest warrant and take her to jail." Sweet! Promise?!

Haha no. My ex took a job where she traveled EVERY week typically Mon-Thurs, sometimes Sun-Thurs. Turns out her being the center of attention (she was out teaching for a high end salon brand) turned her into a w---- so she wanted a divorce. I'm assuming so she didn't feel bad about fu----- around on me.

This was all in 2015. Up until last year she would still occasionally text me and stuff (new phone and forgot to block her again). So in the period of a few months I gave up the house, my dog, got a divorce and was laid off. Jameson still owes me a Christmas card for that year.

They layoff the timing just happened that way. The company was slowing down due to loss of defense contracts and instead of laying off guys on the floor again (they literally had CNC programmers sweeping the floor instead of laying them off), they decided to hit a bunch of office people to build some kind of solidarity with the folks on the floor.

But they gave us all a pretty decent severance, so that helped.

Promise?!
LOL, it just keeps getting better...or worse, for everyone around her.

I feel like calling her the 'Queen of Karens' would be severely inadequate for someone w such supreme deity-like crap-stirring powers haha.

Great story. You had me at snot flowing...

I heard about a coworker who was met at the baggage claim at the airport by his boss, who fired him there. A bit harsh perhaps, but I don’t know the back story.

I will be fired on June 15 for wanting to change divisions within the company, does that count?

At least ex doesn’t get a piece of the severance (hopefully)

What happened? I guess your talk didn’t go well? They obviously trust you. Normally a fire is immediate with an escort out the building and not your last day will be X.
