Back in 1986, we bought a jet black 87' 560sel and only put about 140,000 miles on it in those 20 years. But that thing was a TANK! 5.6 liter V8, everything made out of steel. . . thing was nuts. But it did have it's problems like the power windows seizing up from time to time, the A/C condenser went bad, and it leaked oil. . . . but considering thats all that happened to it after 20 years and 140k miles, thats not bad at all! But why the hell did we keep it so long?! Because it was my father's wedding gift to my mother back in 86. Sold her in 2006 though :/
Anyway, yes, old mercs were great. . . but now days, definitely not the case.

keep in mind though, part of the reason older cars could last so long is because they don't have much to go wrong, comparing to today's cars.
They didn't have satellite navigation systems, traction control, adaptive cruise control, active steering, and all the other modern stuff that can go wrong. They were WAY more basic, so naturally, they didn't even have as many things that could wrong with them like the new models today do. I'm pretty sure the word for that is, efficiency. Technically, since they had less parts on them as a whole, they're more efficient at being reliable. . . if that makes sense.

yes you're right but old merc had more quality parts for interior. When you close a 93 model e-class door, you could feel the quality. Last week I was on a new e-class and when I closed the door it seemed to me light and not satisfactory which shouldn't be for a merc. Corporation with chrysler hadn't worked well for mercedes. They got the bad genetics of chrysler. |

I sold my older brother a '95 F-250 with a 351 in it, it was from my last workplace back when I was in the oil patch.
it has 950,000km's on it. No I am not joking. The body is rough, but the engine dosen't burn a drop of oil. Its crazy, its been driven by probably a 100 drivers over its harsh life, given the turn over rate at the company. Yet it still drives great, and the steering & suspension is still quite solid. That truck is my example of reliability, Just incredible. |

It's sad how far down the toilet Mercedes has gone since those days, my family had a 1991 300E 2.6 which we bought new and put nearly 200k miles (not sure exactly, may have even been over that by the time we sold it) on it. My dad drove it until it became my first car but I wanted a manual so I got my E36 but I never got over how well put together that car was.
Now we have a 2003 E class and a 2004 CLK and they don't even feel like they were made by the same company....and speaking of cars I miss we sold my E36 this morning it was a beat up 318is but this thread just reminded me of how much I'll miss that one too. |

The bit where they removed the plugs and cranked it to pump the water out of the engine was insane. When it started up again, my jaw dropped.

ya the old E's were a fantastic car and it shows in the resale of those campared to the new ones. They had no problem selling those and now they cant give the new ones away.

You guys are talking about the current cars like they are Kias. They might have more quality control problems than most in terms of electronics and such; but i would rather be in a new mercedes than any other car on the road today in terms of being involved in a serrious accident.

amzing vid and felt kinda sad for the car.. can't believe what they did to it. Old merc like that old E is what defined Merc as the bench mark for soo long.. unfotunately, they are not built the same way no more.
however, i don't blame it all on Merc though.. it can be said about BMW, Ford, etc.. they don't build cars the way they were in the old days = reliable. maybe car companies purposely build them cars less reliable so they can sell more cars? lol.. who knows. i was in this old Ford minivan Taxi a while ago.. it had 1 million miles.. yes, ONE Millian.. i felt kinda scared in it but still.. it's unbelievable. i asked the taxi driver how is it possible.. he said he just does the normal maintaince and this thing just kept on going and going and going . FOREVER. i think Ford should give this guy a brand new car and take this oldi into their museum or something. it seems like the only ones that make real reliable cars are the japanese these days .. but even Toyota and Honda aren't what they were back in the days no more. |
