2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 6MT vs 2018 R8 RWS

Currently in the throes of this debate.

I've had 2 981 Cayman S's in the past.

Never had that lambo derived v10!

GTS 4.0 would be my sole car if I went that route, would winter drive it.

if I go the R8 route, I would get a second MANUAL car, something like a honda civic in the 15k range as my everyday car.

I don't commute to work and only put about 15000 km a year on a car.

pros for the GTS:

I would drive it more as it would be my only car, so I would be driving a better manual car more often
I like the size better and the fact it gets less attention than the r8 would
the porsche connected driving experience

cons:
kinda been there done that with the 2 prior 981's, same car just with more power?
it doesn't have an epic v10

pros for the R8:
that v10!
never did the "supercar" thing

cons:
DCT
big and gets lots of attention
prolly only put 5000 km on it a year, so I would be driving a honda civic for the majority of my driving time

thoughts?

I think the used R8 would still be quite a bit more $ than the cayman 4.0 unless you are bloating it

yes the r8 option would likely be the more expensive one...it also involves the need for a second vehicle which involves additional costs as well.

but I am willing to pay up if I feel like overall it's the right move.

Thats a tough call. Would likely go gt4 route due to later value but do like the r8.

I don't think the two cars are similar enough to be able to compare the two. They are apple vs. orange. However, only one of the two will jazz you the most. Only you can decide.

i'd go R8 to try something new and hear the v10. you've already had a few caymans. civic si with a manual would be a good 2nd car for when you want a 3rd pedal. honda makes one of the best manual trans next to porsche.

i'd think about how long you plan to keep the R8. If just a few years its fine. If you are planning to keep it long term then new manual daily drivers may be gone by then. The current c-class, 340i, and A4 do not have a manual option anymore.

As you know, we are both in the same boat but with different cars, including the "I really should not have an extra car if I am sensible" argument.

But you need to scratch the itch, as I do I guess. You get the 981 and you will still pine for the R8, get the R8, if you think it is too much hassle you can sell after 2 years and just wear the tax costs.

My one caveat on that is I just rented my "sensible" car, Mustang GT, and TBH, almost too much power to enjoy on the roads, it needs to be tracked. I am in the opposite boat to you there so to speak.

I think some of the mustang GTs are/were speced with ridiculous skinny tires. It’s more a matter of putting wheels and tires that can handle the power than it having “too much power”. Weren’t they doing something like 255s on some of the FTs? I have 255s for winter that I put on, but I can easily overpowered them on my 1LE. Not an issue with the 20” summer wheels/tires.

No. This was a PP2, see the "struggling" thread. Point being, in 3rd gear, doing 40kmh, you hit the gas a bit to have some fun and you are at illegal speeds, well in excess of legal speeds. At some point, the fun is diminished, you don't even change from 3rd to 4th in a 10 speed box. The car has absolutely shed tons of grip.

This is really not the case. I am cross shopping a Mustang with a 911.

In the end, botht he OP and I want naturally aspirated with a bit of theatre and from there do we go "sensiblish and drive it every day" or "get what I really want and deal with an extra car and the hassle/cost that entails".

You can consider for purchase anything you want - and it doesn't make the vehicles comparable. It just means you can't make up your mind as to what you want. Comparing a Ford Mustang to a Carrera doesn't make them comparable vehicles. Trying to compare a front-engine v8 to a rear-engined opposed-6 cylinder in almost every way is apples to oranges.

I'm not sure I follow. You drove PP2, so that means you have the handling to back it all up, so hitting a turn like an on-ramp or off-ramp cloverleaf is no fun? Or twisty turns or just taking a turn well above what any "normal" car can? You were speaking only of acceleration, but do you consider other factors? Braking?

Cayman GTS will objectively be the better overall driving car.

But the sound of the R8 may make you forget all about that.

R8 will certainly bring more attention.

If one is considering both vehicles then they are being compared, they just are. I hear you in the different nature of the cars but both the R8/Cayman and Mustang/911 have more in common than they don't. In the OP's case, we are talking 2 seaters, sporty in nature, borderline impractical. Now one is punching a huge fuck off engine and the other has a revvy higher strung engine but fundamentally, more in common than not.

In my case, we are talking 2+2 seaters, convertibles, both potentially a DD but also 3rd car potential. THis is not a Camry vs Lambo debate.

I will clarify as I am struggling to convey my message. Yes the PP2 has a great grip, great fun on cloverleafs, big brakes etc. But, from a rolling start, there's just so much power that you tickle the gas on say an on ramp and you are at 150kmh in the same gear you started in and in no time at all. I feel there is more .... engagement... with an engine that needs more revs and a gear change or two to get from 40 to 150. This doesn't make the mustang a bad car, it is compelling for both the price and the ability to DD the thing.

I sorta agree except that the R8 is a driver focused sports car, meaning you'll want to have that manual available, irregardless of your second car being manual also. Now if you were shopping for a beater/grocery getter, then yes, AT would suffice. My 0.02.
