I would probably give the ant eggs a shot and I suspect the meat on the sheep's head doesn't taste bad at all. The rest of it, Hell no!!!!

Tell me, because I damn sure don't know. I'd like to think it was first discovered by some starving, emaciated cave man from the Neolithic era who first figured out that crap is edible. But what I don't understand is how that knowledge made it to 2013, but nobody knows how Puma Punku got built, or what the hell ever happened to Arc of the Covenant. How does that happen?

More than that, I want to know is just how hungry does a motherf*cker need to be to sit down and think:
Well, looky here, we have all these baby mice around. Let's catch 'em, put in a wine bottle and drink the wine. Now, that would help wash down the maggots in the cheese too, wouldn't it? umm, umm good!
You could essentially say that about any one of those thing. But I mean, really, aside from the fact that some clown in the world will eat that sh*t, what's more bizarre to me is what was possessing the first knucklehead who thought that any one of them might be yummy, and then the fool went around telling other people about it.

Some stuff you do, you just need to keep to yourself. Don't nobody else need to know. That's all there is to it.

On the upside, one of those food items has led me to a new theory on why the Minoans just up and disappeared: they ate too much Casu Marzu, and the maggots literally ate them, from the inside out, into oblivion.

I actually only ate the cheeks and a small part of the brain. The brain grossed me out less than the tongue. I couldn’t bring myself to taste the tongue even though people say it’s probe the best part. The cheeks were actually good. A little fatty but tender meat that looks like any other part of a lamb. The people I was with only ate the cheeks, the tongue and the brain. Brain actually tastes good but the idea of eating part of the nervous system bothered me. I just wanted to be polite.

Then again... I’m from the south and some people down here eat things like opossums and raccoons. I could not think of a more disgusting animal to eat than an opossum.

OMG!!! So what did that mess taste like?
Would you eat them again?
Why did you eat either of them?
Is one supposed to eat the mice or leave them in the bottle?
Would you like to buy a bridge I have for sale in New York City?

Details, details, please. You can't tell us you ate that stuff and then say nothing else.

the balut tastes like warm soup. it's the texture that you'll gag on if you pay attention to it. had lutefisk a long time ago, don't really remember how it tastes, and I had something like that sheep's head (pig head)

OK...TY. I appreciate the insight.

Reading that, however, it still makes me wonder given it tastes like warm soup, why couldn't the loon who first opened a duck egg and found a half-formed duck in it (and f*cking ate it ) not just say to him-/herself: "Wow, this is pretty gross looking and it tastes like duck soup. I think I'll just keep this to myself and next time just hide out in these bushes and catch the duck or the drake when it returns to the nest. That way, I can have some meat and use the carcass to make soup afterward." ???

And if the soup it tastes like doesn't resemble an animal-based soup, then WTF not get some water and whatever veggies one needs and make vegetable soup? There's no way in Hell anyone can convince me it's easier to find a nest of half-formed duck embryos than it is to find a god damned bunch of plants!!!

I get that there can be dire circumstances that call for extreme, potentially disgusting, solutions. But that doesn't mean you need to do it again. I was laughing once at a picnic and a fly flew straight into my mouth and it so happened I swallowed it, and no, it didn't taste bad. But when I kill a fly, I don't pop it in my mouth either.

Why are we talking about/eating this third-world food...Don't we all usually suffer from first world problems? For example, which cut of beef to select from the handy leather bag that steaks come in (AKA, cow)

Where's monkey brains?

Apparently in China, they have a rare, and illegal delicacy that involves taking a live monkey (the small kinds), tying them down to a table by their limbs, trimming their skull caps off to expose the brain, then eating the brain while they're alive. Before eating the brain, they pour a special sauce on the monkey's brain and stir it up with an eating utensil which causes the monkey to freak out. This dish supposedly costs a few grand to try out. I want to see a video of this.

Yes, I do pretty much exclusively have first world problems.

I often travel to and work in India and China, and in China especially, one can come across some crazy foods. It's also very possible that you find yourself a guest in someone's home and out comes some dish they are offering in great homage to you. This can especially happen if you meet locals and become friends and they end up inviting you to join them on a trip to their family's home. Trust me, I learned the hard way. Fortunately, I didn't know what I was eating, and it did taste good. After learning it was tripe I ate, I had to admit that even the texture wasn't what I'd have expected. I would eat it again, but I won't ask for it.

The same sort of thing can happen in many non-Western countries. In India, I have eaten things I don't want to eat again, but mostly because it made my tongue burn for hours. Overall, India's not as well developed as China, so you can at times suffer the same issues as the locals. For example, finding potable water in certain places. As a business traveler, this is unlikely in your daily routine, but if you venture off on your own to just explore and experience the native culture, it can.

That said, I think even the most distressed person in the world probably won't be putting mice in a wine bottle. But it's probably not a bad idea before arriving in a new country to find out what the "weird" foods are. At the very least, you'll be prepared to feign an allergy to something before it's offered to you. It's also a good idea to listen to and recognize the names of the common foods you might find objectionable, just so you don't think locals, with their accent that is new to you, are saying, I don't know, pizza instead of piss, or something on that order. One thing's certain in many places: if you say yes, you will very probably have to eat it.

All the best.
