MY2010 iDrive Controller Unit: anyone know how to remove it?

I bought a 2010 550i, and am going through the process of fixing things the prior owner neglected or damaged, one of which is the 7-button iDrive controller in the console. The chrome band around the edge and the chrome ring around the knob base are torn up, and the buttons and nicked up.

I bought a new controller, and tried installing it yesterday, but couldn't figure out how to release the darn thing from its plastic cradle. I had removed the trim panel, but the cradle the controller sits in won't come out of the armrest housing, even though it moves about freely with the trim panel off. I tried looking on Pelican Parts and the TIS website, but found nothing about how to remove the MY2010 controller, which is like the one on the F10.

I didn't have time to get into pulling the whole console out, but maybe that's what's needed.

So, to the community, has anyone removed one of these, and know how to do it?
