Any brand new cars without those display infotainment and digital gauge clusters?
Hi there,
This digital screen-era cars are aging very fast because better and bigger screens are installed every 3-4 years by the manufacturers. That includes gauge clusters and infotainment screens. Is there a bit premium new car without those complications that deliver good quality interior and pleasant ride? Let's say 3 or five series without those digital displays would be great to have.

I wish, as far as I know automakers have to include back up cameras in all cars since 2018 so the screen is mandatory. (this applies to Canada but may also apply to all markets)
Mine's a 2017 with no tech or cameras and a laughably useless display I usually keep powered off. |

The screen doesn’t bother me as much as the instrument cluster. I feel like I’m playing a video game. I’ll take an analog speedometer, tachometer, odometer damn it!

With car prices being what they are, I think people are more welcoming of base cars that have the engine and looks of a specific model but not all the electronic doodads and screens.

New? No. Even a basic Corolla will have the infotainment screen. You can probably still find some without a digital cluster or at least a hybrid, but I can't think of any new car without an infotainment screen.

Count me in for analog too ! All these screens are IMHO what causes distracting driving leading to accidents which in turn puts more " safety chips and computers" in vehicles. I'm keeping my 1987 XR4ti not only for analog, but its a 5sp stick too. Unfortunately it won't be long til you can only get an automatic

This is the cluster in my '19 Golf R. It's not perfect - kinda busy with a lot of clutter - but infinitely better than what BMW is doing, and they just made it even worse with iDrive 8.

I was out on a test-driving spree last week. One of the vehicles that I drove had a 1990's style LCD pager display panel for the fuel gauge and trip odometer, but had an analog tach and speedo. Two miles into my test drive, the low fuel light came on and I had no idea how to translate one flashing bar (like a smartphone signal strength indicator) into remaining miles of fuel! Needless to say, I immediately crossed that one off my list.....

I prefer analog gauges too. The worst thing about these electronic gauges is that people don't realize that their headlight's are off and are driving like that on the highway. I've come up to many dark cars with no lights on and the drivers are oblivious.

My past Audi RS5 (built 2017) has had a pure digital cockpit, several abilities to configure, I hadn't found a really satisfying combo until the sold of the car.
Tbh at least I had used primary the HUD and was never a big fan of this. The new bimmers (G8x series) only holds full digital units, well, I suppose we have to deal with it, since into jet commuters my beloved scale round instruments are gone and replaced mostly by digital ones, my old M4 is the last fortress with it

Man, I wish. I had my M2 in for service some months ago and they gave me a new 340i as a loaner. What a complete CF those digital gauges are. So happy I don't have to deal with that.

I should have pointed out that the vehicle I was test-driving with the 1990's style LCD pager display panel was a 2017 model!
The one electronic instrument cluster that I like is in my i3. Other than the hokey e-meter pseudo-gauge to attract tree huggers, BMW made it concise and useful with no faux video game gauges. It's the size of a large iPhone on its side in landscape mode, and displays the vehicle speed and remaining range in a way that you can quickly read without taking your eyes off of the road. Since the i3 doesn't have an engine or transmission, there is no need to have a tachometer or oil/coolant gauges. I drive an EV completely different from a fuel-powered vehicle, and the most important driver info is the outside temperature, speed, and remaining charge range.....

The Toyota C-HR is still fully analog with only a small center info screen in the gauge cluster for various stats and configuration items. But the tach and speedo are analog. Unfortunately, the car can't get out of its own way and not of a 3 or 5 series type class.

The digital cluster was one of the things that threw me off and made me buy the f80 rather than a g80 (among other things).
After using the G8X at an M track day in COTA, I felt very disappointed in the cluster. At a moments notice, it was very difficult to have a good understanding of the speed and rpms while reading them. Yes, I know the heads up display is there for a reason, but I personally prefer to run my display on the simple setting as I prefer seeing the shift lights on the tachometer. Call me old-school, but I'm not old lol these screens are cool, but not for all applications. |
