I couldn't live on $50K for more than a year, but we can live on french fry wages (or even my wife's pay checks alone) if the monthly mortgage payment was gone.

Given that I am already living on borrowed time with my ticker, I need to make every effort to lower our monthly expenses in case I can no longer work or pass away. I don't want to leave my wife with any additional stress or financial worries.....

Not looking for sympathy, just explaining why I would do something that is completely counter-intuitive to playing the percentage ROI game.

Laying in a cardiac unit bed listening to the hospital's social worker "packaging" me for permanent Social Security Disability was an eye-opener financially. The amount that SSDI would pay isn't enough to even cover our monthly mortgage payment...and we live in a modest 2BR house in the woods and not a jumbo-mortgage McMansion!!!!!

I`m so sorry to hear about your health problems
I know the feeling. I had a heart attack in June of 2020 and it changed my view on life a little bit.
I try to work 4 days a week now. There's more to life than money. Most of the time it works, but there's still some weeks that I have to go in on Fridays for some stupid crap. When that happens I try to take Thursday off .
I figure that I can`t take any money with me, so why not enjoy the things I like while I`m still here. You never know, I can have another heart attack any day and not make it out alive.

Bloomberg has a regular feature "Where to invest" with advice from money and fund managers, and options for 10K, 100K, 1MM. The answers have included art and experiences not just stock picks. Has not been updated for the war in Ukraine so it's not super current but I have found it interesting.

Piece of land. Building lots are becoming tough to find, but don't see this continuing too much longer.

Can I change my answer? If someone gave me $50K today, I'd buy a tank of diesel fuel for my pickup truck.....

I'd put it towards a down payment on land out west so I can build on it later.

Granted I haven't started digging into this too heavily yet because this goal is a few years out, but I'm struggling to figure out how to juggle getting land, building a house, still paying for my current house, all while being multiple states apart. I'm still in my first home, so selling/purchasing/building all at the same time seems overwhelming and unobtainable since I haven't been through it yet.

I would buy a one or two bedroom newly built condo in a high-rise near the Iran Mall in Tehran and rent it out.

Who knew that 2020 would see depreciating expenses such as Hyundai Santa Fe's become investments?

Weird times we live in.
