My life lesson, from my own misspent youth:
Best bet for cheap-but-good is Bourbon. Even the cheapest of them has been aged in barrel (2 or 4 yrs, can't recall) and is basically a single-malt, no additives allowed. If you look a little, you can also find ones that are cheap, but older (4-6 years is the crucial duration to get most of the crap out). Just about anything else is 'blended' and has tons of raw grain alcohol in it, which is probably the worst (this includes those brand-name scotch blends like Chivas and JW, even if high-priced). Aging lets many of the toxins evaporate out, and those are what give you much of the hangover. As you step up to a better brand, they usually use less of the 'tailings' so even fewer toxins. This is why 'Scotch whisky' originally became so desirable - unlike city distilleries, they aged it in barrel and it was much kinder to the drinkers (and a whole lot better tasting).

Some recent Whisk(e)y additions:
  • Highland Park 18 - Viking Pride
  • Michter's Small Batch
  • Glenmorange Signet
  • Springbank 18
I'm more of a Scotch guy, but the the Michter's is a really nice drink and has gotten me thinking again on American Whiskey and Bourbons. I'm headed out tonight to a local whiskey bar to try an assortment of Bourbon and Rye's - - - just to see what I've been missing!

Having a mini Cinco de mayo party tonight.

Ok, first sign you did too many shots tequila is you don't remember doing shots of said tequila. 😳

Ok, apparently I cannot drink tequila ever again. I had entire conversations with people last night that I don't remember. And there was also some unmentionable acts performed later.

Got a colleague going to Japan tomorrow who offered to bring back a bottle. I've currently got a nearly empty bottle of Yamazaki 12 that I haven't seen locally recently. I've had Hibiki 12 and prefer the Yamazaki. Is Hakushu worth a try, or stick with the known? Are there non Suntory whiskies worth trying?

Michters is one of the best I have had in a long time. I have tried another of their offerings and it is nowhere near as good as their American Whiskey

Thanks for the insight since I this is the only Michters I have tasted before!

On my night out, I tried the following (with notes):
  • Buffalo Trace (bourbon) - Nice. Easy drinking, not as smooth as Michters, but also less sweet
  • Eagle Rare 10 year old (a rye/bourbon)
  • High West Campfire (blend of rye, bourbon and peated Scotch)
  • Templeton Small Batch (rye) - I liked this on a lot, nice flavor profile

High West and Templeton are MGP products, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

If you like Templeton Rye... if you ever see a Cedar Ridge Rye is it up there as one of my favorites. Those are both based out of Iowa.

I actually have a (half) bottle of moonshine (The leave money under a tree variety) from Templeton in my cabinet still.

Suntory is doing some good work! I see both Hibiki and Yamazaki in the local Bev-Mos, but haven't ventured to the Yam yet. I've gone off on that rum trail for the past several months.

Hikiki vs Yam - compare/contrast?

Hibiki is cleaner and has more of a Speyside subtlety to it. Yamazaki is smokier and more akin to a Highland Park or Talisker. They're both wildly approachable and easy to drink though, the differences are smaller than say an Aberlour to Highland Park. I tend to buy more complex Scotches, but really do like the ease of the Japanese whisky too.

And I miss BevMo. Texas has Specs which has about 75% of a BevMo's selection.

I picked up a whiskey last weekend that I can't never remember to get a picture of, nor recall the name other than "Double Rye!" Google was my friend - High West. Not bad neat, didn't mix well with diet coke though.

What I SHOULD have picked up was that last bottle of Basil Hayden that is a mix of rye, Canadian, and port. It was just a little too dark and scared me. Now that I'm back on the wagon for 2 weeks, I'll be pining for the Basil the whole time.
