I don't recall how many times I dropped a nut, bolt, screw etc on the ground for the life of working on cars. It would be a nightmare if you drop something under or near the jack stands that you need to remove the tiles to get to.

How about jack stands? Are these tiles sturdy enough to hold the weight of the car on jack stands?

One more question to epoxy coated garage owners. Do you need to reseal it within x amount of years?
This was one of the things that worried me with the tiles. I have similar type plastic tiles in my back patio (ended up getting them for free so what the hell) and I do find a lot of dirt and debris does end up getting into the openings. I've only had those for less than a year so I guess we shall see what happens.

As for the epoxy I'm not sure if you have to reseal or anything. I was personally not told I had to do anything.

I will just say they were fairly easy to install, you just need to cut the sides. They can be replaced if damaged, but I’ve had mine for a good 7-8 years and none are damaged. They do expand and contract in heat/cold, make sure you follow the instructions to leave room on the sides for this.

Get it etched and coated professionally. I’ve done the Home Depot kits in the past but it doesn’t compare to the pro finish. I’m in the Chicago area so my floors get a lot of road grime. I also work on all my cars so they have seen their share of beatings and they still look great.

This pic is right after I had them done. Did the rest of the garage myself.

Doing what I do for a living, I have recently become a pro at floor coatings. Unless you have it done professionally, I would only recommend a poly aspartic coating. Extremely hard once it cures, yet flexible. We tried several different options for 2 part epoxies for protecting painted floors with 5k forklifts driving over them 24 hours a day. The poly aspartic coating is the only one that has held up.

I have swisstrax instead of racedeck but to answer your questions.

1. You can lift them piece by piece, or for spills, you can quickly disconnect an entire section and drag it out of your garage for cleaning. I do this once a year after winter is over (powerwash the tiles w/ a floor attachment) and vacuum/wash the concrete underneath it. Tiles still look a solid 9/10.Those paint can openers you can get from HD/Lowes makes it real easy to lift the tiles with.

2. Depends on the bottom of the jackstand. If they are not flat, there is a chance you will indent the files. I put a spare piece of swisstrax under the jackstand to prevent this from happening. But the same goes for epoxy - the DIY kits dent easily as well.

Anyone with Swisstrax have problems with the tiles moving or snapping when driving in over the lip? Asking b/c I saw someone complaining about this on another forum.

Are you referring to the guy who has to enter his garage at a 90 degree angle and the entire tiled floor was crumbling up?

No issues on my end. I enter at an angel as well, prob around 45 degrees, with some turning needed on the tiles.

Perhaps that dude had an extremely slick floor under the swisstrax which is why they werent holding. I have bare & rough concrete under mine.

Only guy that I have seen having this many issues See post #12...

The old epoxy floor underneath is probably the source of his sliding issue. Thanks!

Oh wow, thats a new one, and first ive seen with that issue. Looks like he got it figured out though at least.

I'm using the swisstrax edge pieces as well at the entrance of the garage, which probably help further avoid this issue

I have been reasearching--or procrastinating, depending on how you look at it--this topic for way too long.

My plan is as follows.
  1. Fill the expansion joints. I think, I used Quikrete Concrete Crack Sealant or something similar. This step has been done and held up really well.
  2. Rent a Diamabrush from Home Depot to open the up the concrete b/c a concrete grinder is just way to heavy.
  3. Then DRYLOK® Protector Clear Low Sheen Penetrating Sealer to protect the concrete from gas and oil stains.

When I sealed the basement floor they only had the DRYLOK® Protector Clear Low Sheen Penetrating Sealer. The advantage is that though it seals the concrete they also let it breath, which was important in the basement so that the floor didn't heave. They told me to never use the normal (wall) Drylok on floors.

  4. Install Swisstrax.

I think this is a good plan b/c...
  1. I can DYI each step
  2. 1 & 2 are relatively inexpensive compared to epoxy
  3. Don't have to worry about any residual acid etch
  4. The Swisstrax will protect the sealer and the sealer will protect the concrete and make cleaning under the tiles very easy.

Me too. Mainly the prep work is a bitch! They even took everything out of the garage for me. Plus the dust was crazy, they had to wear those big masks.

I could do the plastic tiles myself (and did in the patio) or even just paint the floor, but the epoxy prep work is too much for this guy.

Mine looks almost exactly like yours, except I dunno how they laid the flake down, but some areas are a bit heavier than others. Not very noticeable though.

Hmmmm I was wondering the same thing - did you epoxy or any other finish underneath the tiles before laying them down?

Nope, nothing besides a good vacuum and clean. Bare concrete underneath. Considered renting a grinder but never got to it.

If budget is not a problem, go with porcelain tiles.

I agree with this, I sold concrete finishing products for awhile, and the polyaspartic stuff that pros can do is awesome, and will hold up, but the prep and cost is obviously higher.
Some of the finish levels that they can do are out of this world, just have to find a knowledgeable installer.

I have been watching the site regularly. Obviously, Black Friday is the best or maybe not, as I have never seen 30% before.

The deals seem to oscillate between 20% and 20% + Free Shipping. This is the first time I have seen 30%.

Shipping will normally run $199 for a garage size order.

Now and when they have the 20% + Free Shipping is a good time to buy samples and play around with what colors actually look like in hand and next to each other.

Depending on the type of jack stand they can dig into asphalt, scratch concrete, nick/cut epoxy, etc.

Years ago to protect the asphalt, I took some old plywood and cut out 12x12 squares that I place them under the jack stands. I also sometime place them under the front and rear wheels of the jack.

Yes, there are female and male connectors. The female are on one 90 degree side of the square and the males are on the other two adjacent sides. Hope that makes sense. So you can use a paint can key to pull up one corner and remove a single tile or more.

Yes, supposedly you can put a 4 post lift on the tiles if you want.
