My only tips are:
- don't rent a Scenic!
- if you're looking to rent a sports car to hit the autobahn, make a reservation TODAY.

I recommend drive west about 40 minutes to Landsberg am Lech and take 17 down all the way to Schwangau. Thats a bit of the romantic road and ends up at Neuschwanstein Castle. Good one-day drive to/from Munich.

We did that. Munich to Neuschwantstein then back through Oberammergau/Ettal and up the E533 back to Munich. Long day, but a good drive and lots to see.

We rented a MB C180 from Sixt. Word of warning: Two weeks after we got home I got an email from Sixt claiming I damaged the car and asking for my insurance info. They checked the car with a fine tooth comb when I brought it back and there was no damage at all. I called my insurance company and they said, "Oh yeah, that always happens. Just gives us the info and we'll handle it." I told them I did not cause any damage and they kept telling me don't worry, they'll settle it and not surcharge me.

I wrote back to Sixt telling them I had their inspection guy's signature on my paperwork and if they pursued the issue further, I'd file a complaint with the German police. I quickly received a return email saying never mind, it was their mistake. Apologies, yada, yada...

Moral of the story, take pics of any car you rent in Germany before and after to cover your butt.

If you're looking for cool scenery, you really can't beat Ramsau and then on to Berchtesgaden. It's only about 2 hours to Ramsau from Munich, so drive there, enjoy the sites, eat lunch, then head to Berchtesgaden and take the tour of Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. Easy 2.5 hour drive back to Munich.

Here's a Ramsau webcam. Stunningly beautiful place. Check this webcam in a few hours for awesome sunrise pics.

There may be sections of no speed limit. But from what I saw around Munich, those areas are few and far between. Mostly it's 120KPH, which is stateside speed at best. I was really surprised at the speed limits. I drive faster in the States on most days than I did in Germany on our last trip. Not like it was in the 80's when everything was wide open.
