Oh, can I play? When LJ was born I was a 38-year-old Navy Lieutenant stationed in Hawaii, married with a nine-year old daughter, about to transfer to the Washington D.C. area. I already had fifteen years in the Navy and had transitioned from being a Navy Chief to an officer three years earlier.

I'm sure LJ was an adorable infant and just look what's happened to her: Almost 60,000+ appreciates on Bimmerpost. It doesn't get any better than that!

When LJ was born, my oldest turned 3 and my wife and I had been married 8 years and I was 2 1/2 years into my career. We'll celebrate our 46th in a few months.

My active duty military stint ended the year you were born, youngster.

That means you were born the year my wife and got married. And, yes, I was singing it, just like I did when I was 17 years old.

Speaking of old, I apparently started my current job the same year as LJ was born. Next week will be my 38th employment anniversary.....
My 1st job outside the home was selling the evening newspaper on a street corner downtown. I was 10 years old. I retired 11+ years ago at age 64. I was never without out a job during those 54 years.

In reality I’ve also been known to redo my sentences for better structure and readability.
In that last sentence, you need a comma after the first prepositional phrase.

I was trying to keep it clean. It is really underwear that I have that are older than you. Duct tape is probably not the answer!

LJ, you are wiser than your years but you are nevertheless way far away from our lawn. Get your coat and scoot away little one.

I was kidding of course. It's funny how we can feel old at any age. It's only when you get into your 60s, 70s, and beyond that you really understand how young we were when we thought we felt old at 38.

Personally, I am fine with my age and don't regret that I'm not younger. I'm having the time of my life right now.

Please hang around this thread and you will realize even more just how young and vibrant you really are!

Thank you for sharing. I’m serious. I used to always be inclined to use a comma and I kind of struggled with it. But, actually, it can be optional. The “rule” I usually use now is if there is a natural break without the comma it isn’t necessary, but that can certainly be a judgement call. I Googled just to be sure I was remembering correctly and this is what I found on Grammarly. Basically, with a short introductory phrase the comma can be optional. I generally use the old military answer regarding when to salute, “if in doubt, whip it out.”

My reply was to see if you would correct me. I knew you would! I know the comma is optional. Thanks for caring about getting it right I try but I've gotten a bit lazy in my old age. What really matters is the reader gets the meaning of what's being written. However, if the message is grammatically correct it's really a plus.

haha……that’s funny. And even funnier is I didn’t even catch that the comma you used was not necessary. I immediately was focused on the sentence I wrote. I use “auto-fill”, but it frequently bites me in the butt and I have to fix something I chose, but didn’t notice the word I chose was a form of the right word, but not the actual right word.

Okay, I certainly don’t want to derail this old fart thread, but I have to ask. Oxford comma or no?

I agree. I wasn't intending to derail this very important thread. So, let's end this in three, two, and one...

Remembered doing something similar. WW2 prisoners built radios using blue razor blades. Did build one as a kid, but not that successful.

But this learning did inspire electronics later on. Media centre with Bluray in a DVD stacker for my e46 stereo system.
