iOS 9 disabled my phone :(

Damn! I upgraded my iPad last night to iOS9 and all was good. So I decided to upgrade my iPhone 4s from 7.0.4 --> 9.0.0 and now I am stuck in an endless rebooting/install phase. The sad part is that I backed up on iTunes on my WinXP box... using 12.1 version of iTunes and the latest is 12.3... the problem is 12.3 will only install on win7 so now I have a backup that I can't access because after the install Apple requires me to use v12.3 of iTunes to get to my backup. DOH!

I've been trying the hard reboot and trying to "upgrade" from recovery mode so I can maintain my data on my phone. For a brief moment I was able to get into the iOS 9 on my 4s when it first installed and noticed that all my contacts were blown away... but since that time it's just gone down hill.

Hopefully I can wait it out till 9.0.1 is out and then try to upgrade again in recovery mode so I can keep my data safe. I really don't want to restore/blow away all data and settings to get my phone back

Damn, I thought I was the only one still holding a 4. Mine is actually just a 4, so they don't even offer me anything newer any more.

My 6 is on the truck for delivery by end of day . . .

Oh, I tried to move my son's phone from my icloud to another email I had. Just his phone so we could back up his contacts for his new phone, I didn't want all his contacts in mine.
Moved ALL my devices to the new icloud account, screwed up all the apps I had downloaded with the previous one, and it took me hours with a PC to just get the password set on both icloud accounts

And I'm an IT guy . . .

problem is the more you keep fighting it off every year, the more behind you are falling to understanding how it works. I used to hate apple about until about 5 years ago I got my first iphone. I hated them so much before I had the phone I always said I would never need any of their products. Then I bought the phone, leaned how to use it and realized what everybody else was talking about.

Really? Mine seems to run just fine. I haven't really noticed much difference between the two OS's aside from a slightly different GUI.

My thoughts exactly! Plus your phone is 4 models behind now and your iOS is 2 full version behind. Probably just too big of a jump.

Take that POS apple phone to the gun range, and get yourself a real phone.

(Coming from an apple-hating, company supplied iPhone 4s user...)

An iphone 4 is basically a Nokia 6600 at this point but just as an FYI... every iteration / update that apple releases is purposely made to take advantage of the newest hardware... if you have a phone older than 1 generation... do not update because your phone will slow down. I have an Iphone 6 and even my phone got a bit slower with ios9. Granted it's still fast but I can't imagine even a 5s with this new update... TBH, anything older than an Iphone 5s a this point is a dinosaur... people don't think there is a big difference in between each generation of phone because apple doesn't add all of the useless bullshit other manufacturers add with each sw update and it doesn't look as sexy but there are massive HW updates. The only definite POS about apple is Itunes and just in general how it works and syncs with your phone.

I found that you should not upgrade iphones with newer software if they are 2-3 generations back. It will kill said phone forcing you to get their new one. Happened to me with a 3GS several years back. Basically bricked the phone.
The new OS is supposed to take advantage of the newer hardware and sadly, older phones are not up to par.
I have a 6+ right now but am jailbroken so I'm gonna wait a while before getting IOS 9.

Up front, I classify myself as an Apple hater.

But I have the first gen iPod Touch. Got it new when it was still current for free as part of a promotion. When successive generations of Touch's were released, I tried updating the firmware up to the point where I was blocked from being able to update any further. I think I had to do it via iTunes and it said my Touch is too old to support the new firmware. Now why can't Apple do the same for their phones?
