2007 550 SMG help!

Car sometimes will not allow me to go to Neutral and start. ( stuck in first gear with “1” showing. If I move shifter and simultaneously press brake pedal in quick motions, sometimes I can hear it click and car will start. If I remove power from battery and reconnect, it will start up and everything is fine. ( not always) Also, If I wait a few days, car will start right up. Have had the yellow and red cog wheel shown before ( alert, warning), but it goes away. Once started car drives fine with no issues. Mechanic changed the relay, but said I need a whole new unit installed at a cost of 10,000 dollars, or send in for a rebuilt at 6000.00. Funny, mechanic couldn’t get it started, and the car never made it into garage bay, but I started it, and drove it home with no issues... but now, I can’t start because it’s in first gear... any input would be greatly appreciated. The car is in mint condition with
100.000 miles, but a repair like that would be with more than the car. Thanks
