There will be a huge market for aftermarket "exhausts" - ones with some kind of pump for air that you bolt externally and connect to the throttle via obd

Perhaps I'm not understanding this correctly, but the video is referencing interior sounds not exterior sounds is it not? It would be strange (and lame) if your car was making some exotic futuristic racing sound creeping along at 6 mph in a parking lot.
I'm mixing up the two

You're correct

Now everyone in the business can pump out cheap artificial glorious exhaust notes.

Let's see who comes first with the LFA sound track. Just curious how they're going to handle the up/downshift tone change, as the EV will has 2 gear at most in the future.

Well ultimately not a bad idea leaving it scream all the way up to higher pitch than human ear can handle LOL

They are already pumping out engineered exhaust notes, it's just not cheap .

Sound can be important. I just think they should save money and do it themselves instead of paying for a marketing exercise with Hans Zimmer. No one will remember or care.

BMW i4 M50: M IconicSounds Electric deliver a foretaste

Sound has always played a very special role in models from BMW M GmbH - and that shouldn't change in the electric age. The Garching-based company will theoretically make the first hit in terms of electric sound in 2021, because, as is well known, the BMW i4 will also be coming onto the market in an M version, but in fact the M sounds will not come until 2022. All vehicles delivered up to then can retrofit the IconicSounds Electric via remote software upgrade. A first foretaste of the sound of the Gran Coupé, which according to our information is competing as the BMW i4 M50 , is now provided by a video in which we can watch the two sound people responsible for the Munich team at work.

Because behind the BMW IconicSounds Electric is known none other than Hollywood star Hans Zimmer, who, together with BMW sound designer Renzo Vitale, transforms his experiences into the sound of the first electric M models. The duo's acoustic sense is even more important than with conventionally powered models, after all, the electric motors of the BMW i4 M50 generate practically no sound of their own - and yet the sound should significantly support the driving experience and ensure that the M drivers next generation to intuitively associate the sound of your vehicle with sportiness and performance.

Another challenge is the balancing act between a sporty, distinctive sound when accelerating and the ability to glide silently, which many electric car drivers prefer at least in some phases of driving. In order to meet the different requirements, BMW will change the sound characteristics of the BMW i4 M50 and other electric cars depending on the active driving mode and the current driving style of the driver. In other words: the more dynamically you drive, the more you accelerate and the higher the speeds, the sportier the i4 sounds. However, if you are out and about in Eco Pro mode, you can enjoy almost absolute silence and are not disturbed by any artificially generated sounds.

How the sound actually works will not be able to be experienced until 2022, despite the video preview: Just as with the sound of conventionally powered cars, the sound can only be truly authentic in connection with the acceleration that can actually be experienced and other factors. How well Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale mastered this task is something every BMW i4 driver has to decide for himself.

Was that the sound at the end? I hope they didn't pay too much for that.

Oh. Hans.

I'm pretty sure Atari had that sound in 8-bit games in 1982.

Cool stuff 😎

I'm not sure why some of you guys are surprise by this; from ASD to burbles being standard in most current BMWs was just setting the stage for this one day, where the exhaust's aural feedback would be generated and controlled electronically.

Pseudo electronically-controlled exhaust sound in present ICE vehicles is a prelude to future tech and the writing was on the wall for awhile now.

The lack of sound and ability to get places. Arguable benefits in reduced emissions and costs to operate as well. You know, just the obvious EV stuff.

OK let me specify:

These (and upcoming M2) will be the last ICE ONLY Engine.
Hybrids and Full EV will eventually come.
And i'm talking about the M Models (sorry my post was originally in the M Board).
