Back in 97 my dad has a 528i. Many cars later he now has an 06 330i. He did not even look at the current 5 series because he wanted a smaller more nimble car that was fun to drive.

Looks are OK. I'll be driving a 5 series when I'm turning 60. That's in about 23/24 years

5 series is a whole different class of car and more upmarket than the 3. I do like how it is comparatively light for its size (ie compared to the lard ass 3). The 3 is entry level (the 1 is new class of pre-entry ), however as others have stated the 3 series is the quintessential BMW in the way the S class is the quintessential Merc.

I don't understand how the OP thinks it is cheaper though. Isn't it like 45K base? The 335 E90 is a bit of a bargain

i love the look of the 5 too, the interior is a little bland but the exterior makes up for it in my opinion

The OP is leasing. If done right, even a 7 series is cheaper to lease than a 3 series is to buy...

I would go with a 5 myself as well because of the space and the design (which i love). I would have gotten one myself I had 50k+ but I will definitely consider one for my next car
