Angel eye melted, what caused this?

First of all, the car is an E63 M6 so I apologise for posting in E60 forum however it seems there is no E63 forum.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this though?

I bought the car like it and with some other minor damage so not sure when or why it happened. Essentially the H8 bulb that powers the angel eyes has failed but gotten way too hot and melted part of the headlight assembly. The actual Xenon is fine and the headlight on the other side has no damage at all.

I've got another used headlight on the way but I'd like to figure out what caused this to happen in the first place so I can prevent it from doing so again

Does anyone know what might have caused this?

Thanks in advance
