Wouldn't saying you can feed Hawaii's tourism by visiting other islands be very similar to saying you can still feed Hawaii's tourism by visiting some other US state?

I don't follow your question. Vacationing in Hawaii feeds Hawaii's tourism. Vacationing in Florida doesn't.

Maybe I don't understand how it works for you.

How does vacationing in another island support Maui's tourism industry?

I can see it working the same way vacationing in Florida would, but other than that, I'm lost.

How does vacationing in one island help the tourism business in Maui? What you're saying makes no sense.

It is one thing if you can get all your money back AND also manage to find another place to stay. Looking at the map though, with no personal knowledge of Maui, I'm not certain how much was burnt - from an acreage perspective it is something like 1% I think, but I don't know how much of Maui is burnt that is actually habitable.

Not downplaying the deadliness of the fire or the tragedy of it, seems like it spread very quickly with little time to get out.
Hawaii is not like most any other state in terms of population stats. Maui is only 50x25 miles in size. The islands have very limited transportation infrastructure with only one main road servicing any given area. Much of the islands are wilderness (uninhabited) land, which focuses the population into small areas that rely on limited infrastructure. The fire that devastated Lahaina was only about five square miles of land, but is displacing about 8% of the population of the island directly and likely a much higher percentage indirectly.

Because Hawaii benefits from tourism regardless of which island(s) you visit. It comes in the form of those crazy 18% taxes you pay for your hotel. Local business are not what I'm talking about, and will feel the impact of not visiting their specific business locations.

Yeah, I felt you were referring to taxes, that's why I referred to another state (Federal taxes, shared with states).

Taxes are not shared with people who need tourism to survive. Restaurants, hotels, boat tours, city tours, shops, etc. all need direct cash to survive. They don't see the taxes paid somewhere else, taxes are meant to provide infrastructure and services.

If you visit another island, Maui will suffer. You're not helping Maui's tourist sector by visiting another island.

This is not to say you SHOULD visit it; but if you don't, they don't benefit from tourism.

Why did you ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer? Would I go to Maui right now for vacation? No. You do what works for you.

Not a ding on you, just visiting the website you shared.

Found this amusing:
"Don't come in August! In October, we'll need money otherwise we'll not survive!"

Well, duh!

No argument with you either, but "right now" is August.

Yup, I get it. Just found it a bit amusing they're not really giving us a lot of "insider's information" on WHY they're recommending people not to come. But they realize that if people don't go, they'll be in trouble. So it seems counterintuitive, and maybe short-sighted.
It's like having your cake and eating it too. Don't come, don't spend, later just send donations... C'mon...

If they gave us more information that is factual, such as "90% of hotel rooms are occupied by residents", then sure, we get it. Or "we have no running water, power has been cutoff", then it'd be easier to grasp. Maybe I missed it too.

Not sure what a random blog has to do with anything. I would go if I had a trip scheduled. Money feeds into the economy vs a random $10 donation from a SJW which does nothing

I’ve never trolled a day in my life on here. You’ve been proven wrong thru this thread. What do taxes have to do with supporting local businesses? You’ve yet to explain that…

I actually think you’re trolling

I just left Maui. Doesn’t make me an expert but the messaging while I was there was clear. They wanted all tourists to leave. It’s not clear yet when they will be welcoming tourists. If I had another trip planned within say 4 months, I’d cancel it. No reason to go and consume resources.

I have and will again donate to the relief efforts.

I have watched reports on the NBC news, BBC and other outlets regarding the damage, the situation at the local airport and relief efforts. There are people that cannot get into their neighborhoods to access the damage or collect their belongings. Why travel there for pleasure?
