This is why so much emphasis is being placed on his claim to the throne. Daenarys is Rhaegar's baby sister. Rhaegar was the prince, heir to the throne. His father, The Mad King, was killed by Jamie during Robert's rebellion and he was killed by Robert. Lyanna Stark, who was John's mom, Ned's sister and Robert's betrothed, was supposedly kidnapped by Rhaegar during the rebellion. But the truth, unknown to everyone but Ned Stark (he found out when she told him as she handed him the baby John) and his sister Lyanna, was that she ran away with Rhaegar to get married. They were actually both in love and the marriage was blessed by the church. So because John is Rhaegar's son by marriage, he is the one true heir to the throne... The claim of the son is much stronger than the claim of the sister obviously. The questions now are, what will Daenarys do? Will she pull a Cercei and destroy whatever proof exists of John's claim, if any? Will she bend the knee to John?

I was kind of disappointed with the episode, especially since I thought I heard it was going to be 2 hours long. But overall it was a great intro and I firmly believe that none of us will be left wanting in the end... Now if only we could get good old George to finish the damn books, we can have something else to look forward to, considering that the show started to deviate a bit more each season after the Red Wedding... So for those of us that read the books, there's probably a different outcome in the works and it will be something new and exciting.

Oh, I know Daenarys is his aunt. It's still an incestuous situation that I'm sure his moral compass won't agree with, so I can't wait to see how it plays out. I'm also still eagerly awaiting to see what happens with the plot line in the books.

I know Jon is her nephew, that's why I asked the question. Who has a stronger claim, the sister or the nephew? I'm not sure to be honest, but the show definitely pushes Jon as the person with the strongest claim.

Right, but what I'm saying is that John being her nephew is completely irrelevant at this point considering who his Dad was. Daenarys was only next in line because there were no other Targaryens left... But now we know that John is a Targaryen and he's also the son of the first born prince. Because Daenarys is the sister of that same prince, she has no claim as long as John is alive... I'll put it to you this way, in real world UK line of succession, the heir to the throne after Prince William is not his younger brother Harry, it's William's first born son. So pretend that Prince William is John's dad, while Daenarys is Prince Harry, or in other words the red headed stepchild of the equation...

Does anyone else think that the news of hearing that The Night King has the dragon and destroyed the wall should have been more of a dramatic reaction from Jon and Dany?? They didn't seem that shocked. Oh well, lets just go on dragon ride together! I thought I was watching a scene from Harry Potter.
I literally had the same exact thought watching the episode. The dragon was believed to be dead and the wall has stood for thousands of years yet when Bram tells them otherwise there is literally no reaction.

Makes sense.

Tormund is the best!! Loved his giant story and telling Brienne he'd knight her 10 times over if he were a king.

Remind me, when you have a place underground where you keep dead people, what's that called? Is it a crypt?

I assume Ned and Catelyn are going to need to be killed yet again. And are there dragons down there, or are those under Cercei?

I couldn't agree more. It would be one thing if it were a 12-16 episode season, but what we've had so far are essentially two filler episodes and 1/3 of the final season gone.

What I find interesting however is that from all the previews/trailers etc., we've only seen tidbits leading up to the big battle next week (and nothing after). That still leaves three episodes, so I have to think there are going to be a ton of deaths next week. We've no doubt seen nothing from the final three episodes yet as so much would be spoiled from next week's show.

They're doing a fantastic job keeping the lid on spoilers quite honestly, I for one am surprised we know basically nothing at this point about what is going to ultimately happen.

Here's hoping the last four shows are great, there's a lot of making up to do for the first two in my opinion.

This. I believe the dead will be reanimated by the Night King and they will be fighting a multifront war. Ned-Without-A-Head will be fighting for the Night King.

The episode was slower than I expected, but I still enjoyed it. With what should be an epic battle in the next episodes, I liked watching the various character interactions on what is possibly their last night alive or even together. It had me thinking how I would spend my last hours in such a situation (I'd probably join Tyrion for a drink or several).

Now that Daenarys knows who Jon really is, I wonder what her plan is. If Jon survives, I feel he may not even be interested in the throne.

Just my opinion, but GOT has always been about the characters and the character development as opposed to big showy battles. The first truly big battle was Blackwater bay, nearly at the end of Season 2. Think about that for a minute. We went 18 episodes across 2 seasons before we had a big fight on our hands. We've been following these characters for nearly a decade and I for one am glad they are taking the time to tie up loose ends and answer questions about what these characters who have so much history between them would do when they finally come face to face. Diving straight into a battle scene would be as awkward and unfulfilling as Arya diving into bed with Gendry.

Knowing that she is so hell bent on ruling the 7 kingdoms I would not be surprised if she turned on Jon, aka Aegon. She does not want to be a queen in name only - she wants to rule.

Look how Dany reacted to Sansa when she said we fought to take back the north and pledged never to submit to a southern ruler again.

Dany is 100% Targaryen, and Tyrion & Varys may not be able to keep her in check, as has been referred to many times.

Also, her patience with Tyrion is really wearing thin.

IMO, there will be some real treachery once the knight king is defeated (I believe that will happen) and the game is on for the throne.

The first episode have been kind of slow but its to develop for the third episode.

Interesting article I read about hiding all the women & children in the crypts. Where there is a bunch of dead bodies where, which the knight king can bring back from the dead... ummm

It's funny you bring this up. I was watching a show about GoT discussing the transition from Character Development as the focus of the writing to Plot Development a the new focus. The transition occurred when the show went beyond the books and the two gentlemen who write and their team had to move to the new schema. It can definitely be seen in the latter seasons as the plot's action drives the show rather than the characters motivations and reactions to the objective realities about their individual and collective predicaments. A great observation!

Cheers-mk
