Any love for old Mercedes on this forum?

I know that this is a BMW forum and Mercedes are kind of the arch rivals of our beloved cars, but I can't shake the idea of picking up an old Merc to supplement my BMW. I love my 335i, as a daily driver I think it's almost perfect. But sometimes I wish I had something a bit more laid back. A while ago I drove a 1995 Mercedes SL500, and I loved it. The bank vault quality and lush naturally aspirated V8 just fill a role for me that my 335i doesn't come close to filling. Anyone here have experience with the R129 or any other Sacco era Benz product?

I love the old stuff. Had a 190E back in the early 2000’s. Great car and iconic look and feel (and smell).

Sadly there isn’t a thing they offer today that I would spend money on with their engine downsizing, and overcomplexity (powertrain and interior).

This W124 300 CE has been on my Instagram feed recently. I remember when Car & Driver described it as feeling like it was made from “a single block of unobtainium” when they reviewed it. I wanted one in the worst way!! I would still love to have one!!

How about Mercedes-AMG ONE, not the best looking hypercar or old one, but I love the tech and BMW got nothing even close...

This is the only old Merc I'd find acceptable, and it's a restomod.

Currently own a 1995 E320 and a 1985 300 CD Turbodiesel. Love the old Benzes and both of them definitely feel indestructible (especially the 300CD). They definitely don't make them like they used to.

Have a very late R129 SL600. Love it. I think they are some of the best cars ever made.

It's the only Benz I've ever had any interest in, other than the original SL, but I have not yet created FU money.

I’ve always wanted a 190e 2.3-16. They have some awesome history and beautiful cars from back in the day. The only “modern” Mercedes I’d want is the w204 C63

I like the older models, from around 1966-1973, especially the 6.3 but even a 250 would be fine as a rarely driven classic. My godfather had a 1966 250S sedan. If I wanted a convertible, the ones from that era are beautiful but very expensive these days so I would go a generation newer into the 70s or 80s though I would also consider even a little newer if it was something like the SL600.

I did consider an E63 AMG bi turbo AWD instead of my F90 M5, but the M5 weighed less and had better performance.

Absolutely! I go way back with Mercedes. I've owned close to 20 over the years.

I liked my W166 GLE350 4MATIC. Not “old” but not new either. Great utility vehicle with surprising off road capability.

Had a 1980 300D in brown for a while. Such a cool car.

Soft spot in my heart for diesels. Prob won't own another Merc though.

Yes, when I was younger.....I loved the 190e/300e/300ce.....and of course the SL was the gold standard. A guy in town had a new 129 SL500 (this was back in the mid 90's) with gold rims and it was just the most gorgeous thing I'd ever seen.

Also, you have to have the AMG Monoblocks on these cars....

18" AMG Aero II Monoblocks made by BBS are the best looking factory wheels ever put on a car. They came standard on the SL60, SL70, and SL73 and were an option on later SL600s. I absolutely love them.

Monoblocks, BBS LM, and TE37…the holy trinity of wheels.
