Macbook to TV connection help

Nowhere. Chances are your DVI is the old format and doesn't support sound since you are using RCAs. If you're also using a 3.5 to RCA from the speaker than you're not going to get sound on your TV as there is no RCA in for sound. Since HDMI supports audio your TV wont let you pick an external source or audio. You'd need a receiver to play the audio simultaneously.

Where do i plug the rca plugs into? One end is the 3.5mm and the other is the audio rca.

in the picture you provided, do what the "pc in" tells you. use mini dv to vga adapter from your macbook, then use vga to vga cable (which your tv calls rgb).

you must also use mini headphone (3.5mm) from headphone jack on your macbook to mini headphone input on the tv to get sound, as older macbooks do not support sound coming from the dvi port (this is why you aren't getting any sound from your setup, nor will you if you don't use the headphone jack).

once you have this all connected, go to system prefs and select displays... make sure your macbook senses the tv, then adjust the display output accordingly.

i have an old macbook pro connected to my sony bravia this way and it works flawlessly. good luck!

thanks for the useful information. I'll get that cable you are talking about. Two questions

1) is it only the older macbooks that are giving me this issue? If it's a new macbook will I get sound with only the setup I currently have with the hdmi?

2) if i get the miniDVI plug to vga cable, can I just get the cable that has the 3.5mm on both ends and plug it into the audio in port in the back of the tv or do I need to plug the vga/rbg port as well? thanks

with the current setup right now I don't have much of a choice unless i get a receiver later on. And plus it's not something I'd be using on a daily basis. Maybe a couple times a week at my gf's place since she does not have cable.

It doesn't have to be a receiver, just anything with a mini cable in. So Ipod dock, crappy home stereo bs, etc. That way you can keep the digital connection and have louder sound than you have with the laptop.
