Lightbulb 2023 Lucid Air Sapphire Gets 1200-Plus HP And a Sub-Two-Second 0-60

Say what you will about the impending dominance of EV.
Their performance capabilities can not and will not be denied.
This brand is already light years nicer looking than Tesla with amenities to rival The Finest from Germany, Italy or Britain. As expected, this vtype of Luxury and mind boggling performance comes at a price. But it also comes with 500 Mile range which is extraordinary.

Quote:
The Lucid Air is no slouch. In Dream Edition Performance trim, it makes an astonishing 1111 hp thanks to two electric motors, allowing for a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds in pure, silent luxury. The folks at Lucid didn't think that was enough, apparently, because it's just introduced this car: The Lucid Air Sapphire.
Lucid touts the Air Sapphire as the "pinnacle of electric performance," and we can see why. In place of the single rear motor there are now two individual motors, one for each wheel, adding up to a total of three in the car. The extra twist means more power, but Lucid won't reveal how much, saying only that the number is over 1200 horses. It also won't give exact performance claims, but does promise a 0-60 time under two seconds, a standing mile under nine seconds, and a top speed over 200 mph—square at the Tesla Model S Plaid, then.

Straightline speed isn't the only thing that's improved with the Air Sapphire. In order to take advantage of the torque-vectoring capabilities of the rear motors, the suspension has been stiffened, while the ABS, traction control, stability control, and power steering have been retuned. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, and come shrouded by staggered 20- and 21-inch Sapphire-specific wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The wheels also come with removable carbon aero disk covers to squeeze even more range out of the car.

The Air Sapphire is set to begin production in the first half of 2023 as a limited-production model, According to Lucid. What we don't know is just how many Sapphires it plans to build. If you have $249,000 to blow, you can have one, with order books opening on August 23.

So far the only EV's I've seen that I have any interest in is the Taycan and maybe the Dodge Challenger. The Ford Lightning is an interesting concept but the battery range is terrible.

The horsepower wars of the 60s were more about usable performance. Ever since the Hellcat, the modern HP war has just become stupidly about what they can do vs what they should. What is the point of having a car that can break the speed limit in under 3 seconds? What can the average guy or gal do with the remaining 80% of the car's potential ?

I get "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" but this is marketing towards the average rich guy to win on Monday in a street race.

Wouldn't it be a better use of all this engineering prowess to engineer cars for those other than 2% of the population who can afford it, and of those, the 2% of them who have the driving skill to actually utilize the car's performance capabilities? Do we really need more 1200hp toys in unskilled hands?

I mean, you could say this for every new fast car. Does anyone need it, absolutely not. Do people want it, absolutely yes. If they cared about your safety and gas mileage, everyone would be driving a 1.8 liter that had a top speed of 75-80. Why make something that can go 200 MPH down a 25 MPH road? Lol 😂 Like everything else, it's about money!! Everything and anything is about money. Now I'm heading out to rip around in the 1300 HP GTR. Life is good

I agree with you, but the crazy power in EVs is basically just a side effect. Once you optimize the batteries, inverters, motors, etc. for the lowest losses and stack a huge number of cells together for range, you have created a system that is capable of big power almost by default.

Yea, life is good for most Americans, right? You know the majority...that can't afford any of this nonsense & has an average car payment of $700+ right now. Life is NOT good.

Agreed completely but 99% of consumers just want to mash the pedal and call it a day. These logical arguments about "usable performance" given the constraints of speed limits, law enforcement, and other motorists have no place when "instant torque" is all the buying public wants.

Light, nimble, engaging driver's cars are becoming a thing of the past. Just a handful of examples still stand, and most of them are from brands like Toyota and Honda rather than luxury makes. How many ~3500 lb or under cars from BMW Porsche Mercedes etc. still exist? I can count on one hand.

Easy homie. A car does not make your life better. Of course there are people struggling. It's always been that way and always will be. You can have a great life and not own a BMW? Lol. I hope your car is not the highlight of your day🤙

That's great. But the EV will never be a weekend gt3 or 458 for me. It's an everyday tool designed to eat up mindless miles. If you got $250k for a commuter car good for you, you're winning at life.

If I was crazy enough to spend that kind of money on an EV, I would get the Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo.
