BMW to launch new M Electric Sedan w/ 1,300+ HP

BMW Says First M Electric Sedan Will “Beat Everything You’ve Ever Seen”

According to BMW M's boss, the EV's quad-motor powertrain can deliver as much as 1,341 hp

https://www.carscoops.com/2024/06/bm...uve-ever-seen/
  • The Neue Klasse-based model is being tested with four electric motors.
  • This potent new EV should be the quickest-acceleration BMW ever.
  • An 800-volt electrical architecture will underpin the model.

A few short years ago, the idea of an all-electric car from the BMW M brand sounded like sacrilege, but such a car is in the works, and based on statements made by the M division’s boss, it will be extraordinary.

BMW has been working on a powerful, quad-motor setup for quite some time and is expected to launch its first Neue Klasse-based performance sedan in 2026 or 2027. It will be sold alongside the combustion-powered M3 and M boss Frank van Meel has said the powertrain is good for as much as 1,341 hp (1,000 kW) or one Megawatt of power.

According to van Meel, the new EV “will beat everything you have ever seen.” To achieve such a lofty statement, BMW is developing its own electric motors and believes that like the S68 engine of the M5 and the S58 of the M3 and M4, its e-motors “will be a benchmark.”

Motor Trend anticipates the new electric performance sedan from the German brand will be the fastest accelerating car in its history, demolishing the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint in less than 3 seconds. The e-motors could be water and oil-cooled, and an 800-volt electrical architecture will enable ultra-fast DC charging. Van Meel has also revealed that the batteries will have a different chemistry than those of other Neue Klasse models and that they will have an improved cooling system.

The use of electric motors won’t just allow BMW to chase monumental power figures. The automaker has engineered a system that can control the car’s chassis and precisely alter the torque at each wheel, improving the car’s dynamics and making BMW “feel like Alice in Wonderland,” according to van Meel. BMW’s M boss added it will have “neutral, linear, and predictable” handling.

BMW is also considering a two-motor performance EV that is sold exclusively with rear-wheel drive. This model would use similar hardware and software but have less grunt than the quad-motor version. A fully-fledged M version of the first Neue Klasse X SUV could also be a future addition to the firm’s EV family.

About time. I can't believe it's taking them this long. It's been weird watching BMW produce electric cars that can't compete with any competition when it comes to performance. Tesla, Hyundai, Audi, Porsche, Lucid (who else am I missing) have all made fast electric cars while BMW continues to make slow ones.

I see your point, although I wouldn’t call the i4 M50 slow…

Or maybe they are purposely taking it slow as they want to see how other manufacturers fail and not repeat their mistakes...

But ya generally agree.

Cool. My i5 M60 takes 3.3 seconds to get to 60. Imagine another 2 motors. I will definitely take one for a spin when they arrive.

Maybe this one will be negative seconds to get to 60. Finally we can go back in time.

I think the point is BMW’s fastest electric car (i4 M50) is comparable to Tesla’s lowest performance variant (model 3 performance). BMW are ‘behind’ in that regard. BMW doesn’t have anything close to the Tesla Plaid, Lucid Air etc.

This news should address that gap. It’s just a little late to the party. But hey, do we really need another super fast EV sedan at this point? I’d rather BMW make something different/exiciting then simply chasing an already established trend. Maybe they’ll surprise us though.

Indeed, it’s an odd benchmark to boast about. The competition are targeting 2 seconds or less. With 4 motors, that should absolutely be achievable, they just need to put it on a diet.

This hp race is getting crazy.
Why do we need 1300hp? 0-60 in 0.9secs? Ohhkay.

Build a 400hp lighweight EV that can beat a 1000hp Tesla. Then you'll have the performance engineering crown back.

Or 300hp that can go 600 miles so people shut up about range.

That’s kinda like what Apple does but Android fans are so quick to say “erm we’ve had that feature for years 🤓👆🏻” yeah but Apple want to make it perfect and their way I view BMW the same way, they’re quality over quantity (most of the time) which is why I drive a BMW and own an iPhone 😂
