530i Sport vs 535i Prem

I am looking at two cars. A 2007 530I with the Sports Package and a 2008 535i with the Premium Package (not Sports). Price is within $300. Mileage is higher on the 2008. Which one would you buy?

ps. I have never owned a BWM.

The 535i simply because of the engine performance. Also, if you were to choose the 530i, you would probably regret not paying about the same price for the 535i instead.

The 535i without a doubt as not only do you get a better engine you will also get the LCI version of the E60. Newer design headlights, tailights, door panels, etc, etc.

If I was in your place it would be a no brainer unless the higher mileage is really high to make you consider the 07. Good luck regardless of choise.

I think you should go with 530i sport, only because of my own personal experience. BMW without a sports package is a HUGE disappointment. You can barely tell 535i apart from the 530i by looking at the exterior, but you can certainly tell them apart by looking at the interior. If you love the feel of drive more than finicky little improvements, then you should certainly go with the sports package. To be honest with you, BMW with or without a sports package is like a difference between day and night.

You will not be disappointed with the performance of the 535 (as long as you have no HPFP issues)

High Pressure Fuel Pump. I keep reading this term all the time when searching reliability info. Unfortunately I am reading dozens of accounts of problems with the turbocharged 335/535 engines and almost none with the older 3.0. At least none that cause you to get stranded.

Does anyone have information on if BMW has found a real fix for this issue? Or are they just replacing the same part only to have it fail later?

I would've deff gone with a 535i if they were the same price when I bought mine.

Those who appreciate the BMW difference in handling would choose the sport package. If not, buy a Lexus GS350, it's more reliable. Ok, maybe the non-sport still handles better than that. But my experience with non-sport e39 vs sports was that the non-sport was not even close. I assume it's similar with these.

The 535's extra power is nice, but this is a bmw, not a mustang you'll be drag racing through town. Keep that in mind.

The n54 turbo has had a ton of problems reported vs the other engine. BMW high pressure fuel pump...google it or search here. If you feel lucky and never drive where getting stranded matters all that much, then go for it.

Do not feel you have only two to choose from. Be patient, search around, and wait till what you want comes up. Be wary, run an autocheck and carfax, have it inspected before buying, and always assume something's fishy, because in my experience over half I've looked at over the years had undisclosed "issues" in some way. BMW's are great, but they attract sleazebags in greater numbers than more mundane rides.
