It will be interesting to see the reveal and all of the iX's (iNext? Whatever they're calling it) specs and details. This could either be a success for BMW or a failure like the E-Tron or EQC and iPace.

The Audi and Jaguar electric SUVs are just priced too high for too little range.

I think that if BMW can deliver the 350+ miles of range they've been teasing, they'll have a shot at making an impact. Pricing is also a big question mark, but as long as the range is there they should be able to ask what Audi and Jaguar do with a much better reception.

Not being the first to market, BMW has an opportunity to deliver a vehicle which _could_ be a segment leader. Now we all wait to learn if BMW recognizes this opportunity.

If it's electric, what do we need a big mouth grill?

Range is key. It's the benchmark by which new EV products are judged. And, like Audi and Jaguar, BMW can command a premium price because they build a premium product.

If the rumors of a $100K+ price are correct, this adaptation of the ICE CLAR platform is DOA.

Maybe. The Taycan is outselling the 911 in Europe and its WLTP rating is much lower than Tesla's. I think it matters more how the tech works than just the range. I will say though, that BMW needs to keep prices down around the ETron's to even have a chance at this being well received, regardless of range.

Electric charging stations are becoming more common (not ubiquitous) in the US. Range is important but I personally don't see much of a difference been 350 or 400. The key is overall value - why BMW versus every other manufacturer jumping into this space?

With respect; I'm not sure the key has to be overall value here. I think there's room for someone to bring a PHEVs to a higher level of luxury and a premium experience. Just like a Porsche isn't about value; BMW's "i" brand doesn't have to be either. BMW can win by playing on a different field so the comparison isn't simply about mileage and instead becomes about aspects of the vehicles where BMW has decades of success... performance, ride, comfort, luxury, fit, etc..

That won't do well for them. BMW can charge whatever they want and that's their right, but the more you charge the better the product a consumer will expect. Automotive industry is going through a very "exciting" time!

Electric charge station growth in the US is actually quite pathetic

However I do think anything over 350 is great at this point in time

Agreed

There will be many manufacturers that will fail

It's going to get ridiculously competitive over the next several years

I love your handle name!

I didn't mean to imply value = cost effective. I'm with you 100% in that whatever BMW decides to bring to the table, should be uniquely BMW. We should want to buy it because it's a BMW over anything else. That's what I mean by value.

The charging station shortage (other than proprietary Tesla) is a real problem in the US. I do agree that anything over 350 on the US standard would be excellent.

The car in the picture is truly ugly. Reminds me (ugh) of a Pontiac Aztek. Hopefully the real car won't look like this although it does appear to have the bugs bunny grill.

Until the charging station shortage is resolved, electric cars other than Tesla will be problematic. And I am a proponent of electric cars and drive a BMW PHEV.

Right direction for BMW; however, they need to sort out the battery quality issues - the elephant in the room.

When hasn't it been? Really? Failures really don't matter at this stage given the tiny EV market share as no automakers are expecting home runs in a segment that makes up for less than 5% of overall vehicle sales worldwide. Right now it's about automakers getting their feet wet and chiseling away until the EV market share gets to a point where it's critical that they have an offering that works for the current market needs at that time.

What a weird video, but small glimpses of the iNext and what looks to be a nice dark red paint color. Like the concept, it will have frameless glass, handles will be seamless into the door panels, and it will have a design line that goes from the headlights into the a-pillar. It will not retain the notches in the b-pillar however. Rear window has an almost X3-esque look with a slight raise in the silhouette.

I really think BMW needs to give up on those counterintuitive backwards tach and speedo, it just doesn't even look good. They need to offer some more customization like every other brand is.
