Shoes!

It’s past time I buy some proper walking shoes. They’ll be used for the gym and I walk 4 miles(2 paved and 2 dirt) twice a week.

I used to just wear any tennis/basketball shoes but for the past 5 years I just go to Sketchers and ask for something with a lot of cushion. I think it’s time to get something designed to keep the feet bones aligned and help against my calves getting sore after a long walk/jog.

What are y’all wearing and your experience?

Posted this in the health forum for someone who was having problems with their knees and shins. It's not all relevant, but I'm too lazy to edit. Hope it helps:

In my 30’s I started suffering pretty badly from shin splints and tight calves. It was nuts. Took me about 6 months to work through it all. Foot strike, knee alignment on strike, cadence, hip and torso rotation, leg back swing, how you swing your arms, back and neck posture, how you breath, etc. CAN ALL IMPACT the quality of your run. And making minor modifications in these areas can significantly alleviate common pains experienced by runners. Something else that is rarely mentioned / taboo: weight loss. Ten extra pounds can literally be hundreds of pounds on your knees and back. Weight has an extreme multiplier effect that is exacerbated when you run. If you're on the heavier side, it may be beneficial to lose weight BEFORE you start running.

CLIFF NOTES: Proper footwear, stretching, exercises, running style modifications, and weight loss can go a long way.

What model Sketchers are your wearing ? GoRun Razor Elite ? That is a good running shoe that makes a good walking shoe.

When I walk I use my running shoes. Whatever model I happen to be using. I usually have at least two different brands in my rotation.

So many great running shoes out there. Just try different running shoes or order them and return if they feel awkward. Usually a running shoe is 1/2 a size larger than your dress/casual shoe.

Pick your price range and try multiple shoes maybe even a trail running shoe.

No idea, I’ve bought about 2-3 pairs a year for a while now. I just go in and get something black with mesh so it’s breathable, extra wide with whatever type they have that has a lot of cushion. I wear them everywhere except for work or anything more formal. I start out wearing them for daily activities then rotate them to off road and gym use once those wear out. They’re usually on sale at around $60 a pair it’s cost effective.

I have been wearing Brooks Ghost 14. They are a neutral shoe with good cushioning. ASICS and Mizuno also have good running shoes.

I am a pretty big walker (daily average over a whole year is over 16K/day) and a diabetic as well, so shoe comfort is very important to me (I also need wide sizes).

The Merrell Moab 2 is my go to walking shoe for cooler weather. Last year I started looked for a lightweight shoe for the summer months and have been very happy with the New Balance 680 V7. They wear out MUCH faster than my Merrells, but then they are a lightweight shoe and are about half the price.
