Can you use Iphone without Activating it?

wondering if any of you guys know if an iphone can be used with out sim card?
basically to use it as an ipod touch. i like my current phone and have no intention of switching to an iphone, i am eligible for an upgrade from att, and the 8gb iphone is going for $99. so i can upgrade keep my current phone and get an 8gb ipod touch for $99 as long as i can use the iphone without a sim card.

No, you'll need to activate it to use it. And you can't just activate it and then immediately cancel as when you cancel it within the 30 day period, they expect the phone back.

You'll have the plan and an AT&T account all setup before leaving the store and before the phone ships if you order it online.

will i be able to use the iphone after activation without the sim card? take is to take the sim card from the iphone and use that sim in my current unlocked phone and just use the other functions of the iphone.

You need a SIM card, but it can be an invalid card (cancelled account for example). I've jailbroken and unlocked a few iPhones with an old T-mobile SIM card that no longer works.

Yeah, once the iPhone is activated, you can take out the SIM and the iPhone will still be functional. But, it will keep on annoying you about the no sim card present and you will have to reinsert the SIM card every time you update it as every update causes the phone to be reactivated again.

instead of going through the hassle of getting a dummy sim card... why not just sell it for more money then it cost you to upgrade and take that money, buy an ipod touch and pocket the rest.

this has got to be one of the weirdest questions ever, but yes you can still use the iphone without the sim card in it.
