Now, I can slam Jack/diet all day long. Makes whatever I'm BBQing a lot better too. When we go out to dinner on weekends, if I have a DD, I'm in 3 deep before we finish.

Since I'm diabetic, Dr. told me to stick with the hard stuff, neat. So I have skinny or diabetic Cadillac margaritas (diabetic is tequila and Grand Marnier in a glass with salt on the rim)

I went with some co-workers a while ago to a conference. The host was issueing drink tickets for each night. They were amazed when I put away 6 Jack/diet and was still fully functional in discussing the merits of new software choices.
Just curious...doesn’t the hard alcohol work against you because you have diabetes?

I have one a night, usually Italian bitters like a Negrino, old fashion or even just campari and soda.

The mrs is having a glass+ a night of red and it's seriously costing us big $$$. I say we spend, between ourselves and social occasions, $300+ a month on booze.

Based on the results of the poll, from one apparently budding alcoholic to your wife, a nice red wine I've been enjoying lately is either Stave and Steel, or the Robert Mondavi Private Selection aged in bourbon barrels. It is important that the Robert Mondavi one is the one that is aged in bourbon barrels - there is a difference.

Both are currently in LCBO, but moving quickly.

I miss that guy. Show will never be the same. Amazingly he played such a good drunk when he was really sober. Only thing he was addicted to earlier in life was VLTs!

So cool what he built in his free time:

You would think, and so did I for a long time. My cousin (also diabetic) recently explained to me that while the liver is busy dealing with alcohol, it doesn't release glucogon, so blood sugar can actually plummet during drinking.

SOooooo, being drunk all the time is actually good for me!!

But alcohol in your system can diminish the effectiveness of the glucagon pen should it be needed for extremely low blood sugar... Having these discussion with my 17 year-old son who is a type-1 diabetic, with input from his doctor. You can drink but have to watch the lows!

Alcohol is a gateway to food, so lows are NOT a problem when I'm drinking

Just last night, I did some computer work for a school teacher. He brought me a bottle of Maker's as payment. We had a snock and then he left. I poured another couple of fingers, and sat to watch AHS- Apocalypse. My youngest son's diabetic GF walks thru the kitchen, and as a parting blow tells me "Don't eat too many of those candies" I wasn't even aware of what I was doing 217 at bed, 153 fasting this morning.

Hey, have you seen the new glucose testing machine where a "pellet" is inserted under the skin every 3 months, and then you just wave a sensor over it? I just finished my latest drug trial and they were trying to push one on me. I called them aliens trying to tag me Eversense maybe?

No, have not seen that! Might be helpful if they included GPS tracking so I knew where my son was!! And will they allow one for my non-diabetic son for similar reasons?

It's nice that this poll capped out at "16+" drinks (per week).

My 'natural' rate of alcohol consumption is about 7 - 8 standard drinks a day.
That's generally a six pack of beer in the afternoon on weekends or two to three glasses (a bottle) of wine per night after work.

... I prefer to put it that way, because it sounds far less outrageous than "at least 50 per week".

I do try to limit that - but some weeks are better than others.

I love spirits. There's nothing like a good quality Vodka or Gin straight-up; but I really don't buy them any more because I'll burn through $60 in a couple of nights.
(And, you know, that level of drinking is unhealthy )

My current lifestyle and where I live puts me in a position where by normal standards; most would say I drink a lot... and I would agree. But easily up to 6 in the weekdays and another 6-7 on the weekends. That adds up to around 13, so almost the highest bracket. I know for a fact this will change within a year or so... typically I will never have more than 2 drinks a day but if you do the math though... thats still roughly 14 a week. I never drink a large quantity at once; however it is quite often.

Liver panel looks quite solid though...

Pretty busy so only go out once or twice a month. Those nights I will have like 8-10 drinks comprised of shots and jack & coke type of drinks.

Past 5 wks though I have more more free time and get wasted every weekend.

But still, I feel like I make up for it because I'll typically have 3-4 drinks a day on the weekend over the course of the day (sometimes more if we are doing something special) and I'm starting to wonder if that's a bit much. So thought I'd compare against what others typically consume - so please be honest!

I cut out alcohol for an entire month a while ago but honestly didn't notice anything different.
Why is 0 not an option?

Because 0 means you don't consume alcohol, and the poll asks how much do you consume. hehe

blame college for it - im sober during the week, not a single sip of alcohol mostly because lack of time.

come friday 5pm though, happy hour begins. $1 jager bombs + friends is a dangerous combo, only to be fueled by a food break around 9ish, bring people to my place/go to someone's place to continue drinking then head out again until 2am. rinse and repeat on saturday as well

dollar bombs combined with knowing many of the bartenders usually leads to sub $10 spent including $5 cover and 5-6 blacked out people, at least...

if you were one, how did you go from a high functioning alcoholic in college to a grown up human being after graduating?
