Might be moving to New York!
Ok, folks, so that's really the reason why I'm nothing but a Civic Jalopy troll on the E90post board - pretty much because I've been waiting for almost a year to see which graduate program will take me in (and if it's a program in the East coast, it makes no sense for me to get an E90 here in California unless I'm brazen enough to tack on cross-country mileage). On top of that, I am heavily considering an Xi for the East coast.
Anyways, got invited for interviews for: 1) Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, NY) 2) Roswell Park Cancer Institute (Buffalo, NY) 3) Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) <--- I am stoked!!! How are these places like? I have never been to NY in my life. |

Last I check, Bronx is NOT a safe place to be in... But that is when I was there like 2-3 years ago though, not sure how "safe" it is now.

Yup, I was concerned about the Bronx too. Bad hype, if any. But, however, I did get a call from a travel agent there saying that the campus is located on the "good" side of the Bronx...so I suppose there's actually a nice part for the Bronx?
On top of that, wouldn't it still be feasible for me to live in a nicer location, say near Manhattan/Central Park and commute to the Bronx? |

Northern Bronx is generally a good neighborhood. The more north you go the closer you get to west chester, west chester is a rich town. If you're planning on traveling from Manhattan to the Bronx, I strongly suggest you drive.

Buffalo!!!!!
It's actually a nice place to live. The town I actually live in (Amherst, NY) has been voted the safest place to live in the country (above like 100,000 people) for something like the last 8 out of 10 years...

Ok, theres allot of talk about The Bronx being "unsafe."
Let a person who was raised in The Bronx talk about The Bronx...its unsafe, lol. but not all parts. Most of it is good. Living there was great. I agree the more north the safer. Living in the city will be expensive. You might be interested living in Riverdale in The Bronx. You'll be fine. check out the last paragraph on this web page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverdale,_The_Bronx Look at the good stuff.. Yankee Stadium Bronx Zoo Fordham University Manhattan College Ever see HBO's "Hookers on the Point"? yep, in The Bronx, south to be exact.

The northern part of the Bronx is definitely nicer than the southern part, but you may also consider living slightly further north in Westchester County. Most people in this area commute to wherever they work, anyway (I work in NYC and live in NJ).
But, if you are going to school it may be a good thing to live closer. As someone else has mentioned, the Riverdale area of the Bronx would also be a good choice. As far as the E90 goes, an XI isn't really necessary. I get by just fine with a set of snow tires (mounted on another set of alloys). The bigger issue would be parking. If you don't have off-street parking, you may be asking for scratched bumpers. Some of the cars I see in this city look like they've been to war!

Congratulations Squawks, I knew you were a genius. I hope your pups approve of this????
NYC is a fine place, rich with history, art, culture and cabs. Oh and some amazing Jazz 7 nights a week! Here are my girls on 51st heading for breakfast, and the Gage Bass Shop stock...

I went to grad school at Cornell and had quite a few classmates who hailed from California and who had a tough time there. During much of the school year it's dreary, cold and snowy there so be prepared. Not trying to give you a bad impression before you even visit, but just making you an informed prospective candidate. On the other hand, the spring and summer are absolutely gorgeous in Ithaca and upstate NY in general.
Congrats on your interviews. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about Ithaca. |

Thanks for all of your advice, folks! Stew - that is also a major concern! My two dachshunds aren't the thick-skinned type...I might have to clad them in thick, canine jackets if possible.
Which brings me to my next question - Jason, ever see any dachshunds around Ithaca during the winter season? |
