So the wife and i dont "drink" but would like to get into something. suggestions?
I haven't had much more than a 2 beers on the weekend in the last ten years, but we are coming up on my 40th birthday party. The wife has had the typical Margarita etc but nothing high end. Its not that we haven't wanted too, we just haven't had enough interest I suppose.
So for my 40th I would like to have a good time with some great drinks for myself the ladies. What are a few things I should add to the shopping list? "I dont know, what are your tastes?" you say? I would categorize it as unrefined but open minded.

My easiest answer is what my wife and I drink... Gin and tonic for me. Cosmopolitans for her. Cabernet or Brunello for both.
Moscow Mules are (or at least were) pretty popular. I'd avoid anything too harsh or that requires acquiring a taste given the circumstance you described. Happy 40th!

A celebration like that deserves wine. It's classy, tastes great with dinner and or dessert and you can continue to sip it well into the night with a light buzz, without getting retarded drunk or stupid.
I have my share of cocktails and such and the wife and I hate beer. So for nice dinners and and hanging out to talk, the wine always comes out. I must admit that wine had to grow on me, at first I didn't like the taste but now I can't get enough. Good luck, have fun. |

Gin and tonics are easy to make and delicious. Pour one part gin and three to four parts tonic water over ice, squeeze a few lime wedges over the mix and then throw them in. Stir and enjoy. Yummo.

Honestly there are a LOT of drugs I would recommend above alcohol. But you need to do your research.
Anyway in response to your OP alcohol is alcohol. I like beer but in reality as long as you know how much actual alcohol you're consuming drinks are all the same. You're having them to feel the effects, first and foremost otherwise there are lots of crazy things you could eat or drink that taste better but aren't psychoactive. |

For me Don Julio Blanco(silver) shots, i keep my tequila in the freezer. Mixed drinks give me headaches due to the sugar in the mixers or soda.. etc/

I'd skip the champagnes, those require training to tell a good one from a bad one. A white wine, or a rum drink with a sweet mixer should be enough.
Congrats on being so old so soon.

Vodka soda's are a staple. I throw a splash of orange or grapefruit in mine to keep it tasteful. I use Kettle One.
Also a great drink is Makers Mark and ginger ale. |

Edit: I congratulated him earlier, so i literally meant no vodka for the couple, or the guy will be pregnant, not the wife.

Bullshit you're kidding.
I think that's what I did for my 50th but I can't be certain.

Nice bottle of good red wine since ur a lightweight...make sure to chill it lightly and not drink it room temperature you newb. I'd probably recommend a Pinot Noir or Malbec..

Sweet bitters, you get a light buzz and you move away from the full sweet drink experience without going hardcore.
Negroni is a good place to start, for something fresher try Camapari with peach schnapps and orange juice. If looking for something more adult, try Italian Amaro, specifically Montenegro as an evening sipper to adjust to the booze. |
