It's a shiny new toy - people often have a genuine curious interest in getting a closer look.

I've always taken this as a sign others share an appreciation for cars that I own.

The words 'how much' are often said without a second thought.

Now that IS interesting. Did you notice any wear on the magnets? Any blackened circuits? Anything show heat swelling?

I didn't notice much physical wear whatsoever, which was surprising. The entire motor and control electronics side was really clean, no corrosion or intrusion of coolant.

There's obviously cracking in the plastic sheath over the rotor permanent magnet, which was extremely strong, and there was a plastic collar on the rotor shaft behind the impeller that was broken and crumbled, but that may have been from me disassembling it.

The three leads to the motor windings were broken, but that could have just been from me taking the halves apart.

The control electronics were very delicate looking, with 3 different places where tiny little solder leads jumped between the different boards. Seemed like possible weak points. But I didn't observe any noticeable burned out sections, then again I'm no EE. It did have this awesome clear gel conformal coating over it that would stick to your finger and then flow back into its original spot. Also, the inductor/capacitor pair was kinda cool in how it was assembled into that plastic tray, staked in place with rtv, then dropped into the assembly as one piece. I didn't have a small enough torx bit to remove it.

The motor didn't function at all when removed, and after looking at it it seems like an electrical failure, not a mechanical one.

Yeah I see that crack now. I used to do a lot of aquarium stuff and whenever a pump stopped working I would take it apart to see why. Very common to see rotor magnet cover damaged. Usually bad enough to contact magnets.

That's interesting. This one seems pretty well protected, since there was that plastic insert between the magnet and windings too. Hard to tell but there was another bearing at the bottom, so it was aligned well.

The magnetic attraction sucked the shaft into place and it rode smoothly in the tail bearing.

Lol paging jtodd

Most pumps I've seen had magnets incapsulated within the housing, so they weren't visible. A plastic button on top and bottom would hold rotor shaft in place.

I could never understand how the rotor magnet spinning is cooling water could become damaged. But it was always damaged if pump failed. These were up to 500gal/hr and this pump is probably 5gal/min or more.

The biggest pump I've used was 1/2hp and ran 25gal/min at 30ft head. A monster. Hasn't failed yet(although the volute was leaking)and will be interested to see when it does. Ran constantly for over 3 years so far.
