When do I need to change my water pump on e60?

I have 70K miles on my 2009 e60, do I need to change water pump? I've been quoted $2500 for parts and labor to change belt kit, thermostat, water pump etc. - is that ok-ish price? Thank you

Ops, sorry forgot to post that in the first place: it's a 528xi 2009 - so I guess it's n52? I may be wrong. I'm in Long-Island, NY
Thank you

P.S. I've heard about water-pump failing issue - just not sure if it applies to 2009 528xi or not?

If it was me, I would just wait until the pump fails. The n52/51 uses the electric water pump but there is no set time when they will fail. You could make it to 100k before it goes. It's completely up to you if you want to change it before it fails, it could save you a tow bill. Usually there will be warning signs and you can possible limp the car home if it did fail on you.

It's a BMW. I would replace your water pump every 60,000 miles. A water pump every 60K has been a BMW mantra for about five decades now. A failed water pump will leave you immobile on the side of the road. How lucky are you feeling?

Thanks guys! So do you think $2.5K all in parts and labor is good price for water-pump, thermostat, coolant, belt kit?

ECS tuning sells an entire kit minus the belts for around $600. Belts are inexpensive. So basically you're talking roughly 1800 to 2000 in labor. That's ridiculous. Where did you get a quote for $2500?

I had mine replaced in Fairfield, CT for less than $1k. $2.5k is robbery and to me implies this shop has never worked on a BMW, or they have and just don't want the job.

That's a $1k job all day...I would NOT pay $2500, that shop is taking you for a ride

My water pump failed at 86,000 km. Cost $1095 to fix at the BMW dealership.
It was -20 degrees Celsius that winter day. We drove it 5 km, then it went into limp mode so we stopped. Waited 20 minutes, drove another 5km. Repeated this 4 times. Took 2 hours to get to the dealership. I had time that day. Better than a $150 tow.

Im at 115k on the original pump. Changing it out tomorrow. Its a pretty easy DIY on the e60 because the pump is pretty easy to get at compared to the e90.

I know of an independent BMW mechanic. He's located in Westbury (17 State Street Westbury). His name is Adrian (516-876-6940). He's done work for me and I trust him. It maybe worth giving him a call to see how much it would cost you since he's local.

I take back what I said. I finished the job, but it took 6 hours all together. Very tight working area because I have the active roll control. Getting all the hoses off and on was difficult, needed multiple u-joints on my ratchet to get off some of them. If you can get it done for about $300, that would be worth it.

Just wait till it fails. Mine just failed about 2 months ago. it sucked. I had them do some other stuff too while they were in there like carbon blasting and i had a gasket leak but I think I did all that plus the water pump for right around 3k. Hurt my feelings. but that's how it goes sometimes.

How was the carbon blasting??
I am at 115,000 km and haven't had it done. Dealer said it would make a big difference to performance. How did you feel after it was done?

Had mine done at 60k. Don't feel a bit of difference. Glad I had it done. Got great before and after photos. Just don't expect to feel like you just picked up 50 HP, LOL.
