Do you want to quit smoking?
I think I have found the solution for my nasty habit. I have smoked a pack a day for a long time. Quitting cold turkey did not work for me. The cravings were unbearable not to mention the attitude I developed after the second day. This was about 6 months ago. One of my buddies, who was a pack a day smoker, told me about Chantix(varenicline). It is made by Pfizer. I was skeptical that a pill would work. I researched it and there are some great testimonials about it's success. I got the prescription about 2 weeks ago. You start with 1/2 mg once a day for 3 days. Then you go to 1/2 mg twice a day. I am now taking 1mg twice a day. There was slight nausea when I went to the 2mg's a day. Wild dreams are another side affect. The first night I was on the drug I dreamt of a pit bull attacking me along with some other weird ones. I have been smoking less and less. This morning I made it through coffee with out a smoke...:rocks:. This is usually the toughest time. I normally have 3 or 4 with a tall coffee. It is 8:30 am CST and I have had 1 smoke. I feel like I am going to make it with the help of this drug. It basically blocks the craving signals from reaching your brain. You eventually wean yourself off them completely with out the crap that goes with cold turkey. I bought some patches a while back and they are still sitting in the kitchen. I highly recommend this to any one who really wants to quit.

Good plan on your part. BUT (yes, there's always one of those around) what happens when you want to get off the pill? How much effort does it take to get off that?

The key to quitting it to change up your routine. Smoking is a psychological as well as physical addiction. Instead of having coffee in the morning try juice. Put yourself in different situations that don't precipitate having a cigarette.

Good shit.. Whatever works.. I have tried quiting 1000 times.. Last year I just got fed up and did it cold turkey and I haven't picked it up since.. When it comes down to it, it's your self control. I seriously had to change up my daily routine. Try and do things differently then what you did before when you smoked. On your breaks take a walk, instead of drinking a large coffee, try something cold. These are somethings that helped me.. But like I said whatever works for you...

You smoke ol' reds. I was down to Marlboro Ultra Lights but still huffed a 100 down in about 7 drags . I just finished a reuben and a cup of gumbo and really don't need a smoke. My mind pops up "time for a smoke" and I say in a low murmur "no no no". The cravings for the nic are really going away. Yeeeeeehaaaaa! To the question of what to do when the pills are gone? My buddy has been off them for sometime and remains smoke free. He said a lot is mental strength then. I don't see a problem there. The cravings were killing my attempts. With this drug it is so much better for me and everyone around me.

Thanks. I really hope it helps someone. If you are a social or part time smoker, quit kidding yourself. That's how all full time smokers start. As far as stop drinking for 6 months.....I don't think i could go with out a cold beer for 6 days.

quit cold turkey here 2 years ago...
The best influence for me was when my kid came to me (3 yr old at the time) just after Peter Jennings passed away and sadly pointed out what killed him... That was the last cigarette I had... |

Along those lines are what got my attention. My dad is getting up there in age and looked me straight in the eyes and said "please quit smoking". That pretty much did it.

Last call on this one. Going on 3 days smoke free.:rocks:
The tough test was last night. Poker game with beer and a bunch of smokers. Only looked at the guys pack next to me one time. A couple asked about Chantix and said they were sick of smoking and were going to the doc to get some. An English buddy of mine is also going to try it. If it got me off the nails it can work for you.

I quit about 8 years ago. I had "tried" to quit over several years before. This time, it was just after reading a book about group psychology and something struck me that when you want to smoke, "something" has to happen afterwards. As long as you block this, it presses harder. I turned this "something" into adding a mark on a spreadsheet for how many times I wanted to smoke that day. After a month or two, it came down to zero. I felt after I had made the mark, when the urge arised, I had satisfied it.
