In my family we have a 2006 530xi (197000 kms), and we've recently encountered a strange problem with the cooling system. We're losing coolant at the rate of about 1 litre per month, but we haven't seen any puddles so far, which is really weird. Is the coolant mixing with the oil somewhere, or it getting combusted in some way or another? Have any of you encountered the same problem?

It could get into the oil if you have a cracked block. Drain the oil and see if you have coolant in there. But before that, look around in the engine bay (top and bottom) for a white residue, which would be dried coolant. It's possible it's all collecting on the splash guard so take it off and look. It's not uncommon to develop a leak in the radiator, around hose fittings, the expansion tank. If you can't find anything, there's a liquid you can add to the coolant that shows up with a UV light.
