I tried to walk to my mail box barefoot yesterday (AZ, 104F), I ended up running back into the garage... I did not make it to the mail box

Thanks guys, you've been very helpful!

Simply, Barefoot Running is basically running barefoot, or with very thin-soled shoes (both Nike & Vibram make specialty shoes for it).

the idea is that shoes have caused the smaller muscles in our feet to weaken. This is leading to increased injuries in runners.

They cite studies of runners in Africa that have substantially lower injury rates as evidence.

Anyway, I was thinking of giving it a shot.

Yeah, the 105 degree heat is pretty much a deal killer, but I was out this morning, and at 85 degrees, it's pretty pleasant!

I used to run a lot of track. Barefoot running can help you to avoid shin splints and other stuff like that. I go up and run at my high schools field which is the new astroturf substitute stuff.

Vibram has the five finger flow, seem pretty cool for parkour and what not.

Barefoot running, if done properly, is known to help prevent injury by increasing the strength of stabilizer muscles, ligaments, and tendons on and around the foot. In my experience (at least if you are training for cross-country or track), the most effective way to utilize barefoot running is to do it a few times a week after workouts. Be sure to do it in the grass, and only for about 10-20 minutes max.

I personally feel like it is effective if done properly.

I wear them all the time, even when not running. They are so light and, I think, are really comfortable. When they first came out, the ad campaign was that running in Nike Frees was like running barefoot.

I suppose running on the sand would be the best for you.

I walk barefoot pretty much everywhere around my house, including outside.

sometimes this forum would be so boring and uneventful if not for Spool's witty comments and threads

here's a link to wired magazine it explains why barefoot running is better than running with shoes on, It has to do with the fact that when you wear shoes you tend to land on your heel and let the shoes absorb the shock, if you are running with your bare feet you instinctively take shorter strides and land on your mid-foot. There's like scientific studies and stuff that's been done on it, our ancestors have evolved to run on barefoot for thousands of years, only recently did we invent the sneakers. Then after the invention of the sneaker things like plantafasciaitis started to haunt runners, scientists are contributing this rise in sport injuries to the way that sneaker had changed the way we naturally run for thousands of years....blah...blah...blah....yawn...anyway, i don't want to bored you guys anymore by regurgitating what i read...go to this website and see for yourself: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/07/barefoot/

and those "foot gloves things" scares me...who knows...it might be the future...
