I grew up in rural FL, then GA, TN, and some other areas of the country but snakes aren't something to be worried about. Vast majority aren't poisonous, are killing pests, and don't want anything to do with you. Amazes me the things most likely to kill us we don't worry much at all about but these really out of the ordinary things like alligators, snakes and sharks puts people in a panic. Snake bite deaths are between 5-10 a year in the U.S., roughly 40,000 die in car accidents.

My sister was bitten by a Cottonmouth, she tried to pick it up because she didn't realize what it was and I had a pet snake for roughly 7 years. She was ok after a surgery but if she had left it alone it never would have happened.

Just about everything in Australia is trying to kill you, from critters, spyders, fires and your government. Even the Koalas are getting the heck out.

Snakes are everywhere, harmless ones on my former MA & RI rural properties, have a 2ft+ harmless (I think) snake living on my lot now in giant community UT property. Have to get rid of it as the wife is deathly afraid of any snake, but back in India they have had Cobra's & Viper's slither into her house.

If it's eating mice/rats you are better off with it than without it as they are the ones after your stuff and they transmit diseases. Why not try to identify it? Pretty simple with a picture.

My mother has alligators in a canal behind her house. Extremely rare to have an attack, internet makes it seem far worse than it is. Biggest reason they attack people is people feed them, same problem with a lot of wild animals.

I see benefits to both I guess. I do like more space though than not.
You give criminals too much credit. Maybe your Jeffrey Dahmers or such would have such elaborate plots. The VAST majority of criminals are not that smart. Probably wouldn’t be criminals if they were. I’m waaaaay more concerned with your average meth head breaking in trying to steal stuff than being stalked by a serial killer mastermind.

Also rural areas tend to have less people. By default less people = less criminals and less serial killers.
