New Years Eve

What was your wildest past NYE?

What will most of us (not) be doing this NYE? (since there are only a few young'ens who are probably going bit time)

Y2K. I was civilian working for Navy, never been placed "on call" before. Freaked the f out, and nothing happened. (well, other than being prepared for the next 13 ends of the world)

Lawn, get off of it!

I did Times Square twice. One time we stood outside like all the crazies, it had to be easily 1998. People making the streets their personal toilet (like all of NYC) but it was madness, 5 minutes after the ball dropped the whole area scattered like cockroaches and you couldn't tell anything happened.

2nd time, I was deathly ill. My GF and I went, I barely made it through dinner. We watched the ball drop from the hallway window in the hotel and then I was done. Most expensive WORST night ever but she got to experience something I guess.

Y2K. It wasn't wild but it was a lot of fun. I figured that since the world was going to be blown to bits by rogue nukes flying everywhere that I may as well be somewhere that it wouldn't really matter so I picked up my GF and her daughter and went to the camp. It's in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere, no power, no running water and no cel reception. We all had a great time playing card games and playing darts and just being silly. The daughter(12 y/o at the time) fired a 12 gauge shotgun for the first time at midnight to ring in the new year... knocked her back a step or two. Also lit off some fireworks.
Then in the morning all was right with the world except that some new model cars were coming up as "horseless carriages" at some DMVs.

This year is going to a quiet, stay-at-home evening, probably with some chinese food delivered... and a bottle of rum.... good rum.

Happy New Year everyone. May the new year see a return to more normal times.

Yeah, that went on here too. It's part of the reason I wanted to get the hell outta Dodge for a few days.

I spent NYE 1989->1990 in Times Square, partying with Dick Clark on the broadcast platform. Press pass, police escorts, VIP bathrooms, after-show party at the Marriott Marquis, the whole nine yards.....

Well, let's see...

My wildest Christmas Eve was in Vietnam, 1969, when we shot off dozens of red and green smoke grenades. I think there were parachute flares as well.

New Years Eve was just random red tracers flying through the air. You didn't really want to see any green tracers - the enemy used green and we used red.

Nürnberg Castle, 1984. I was stunned at how many fireworks went off all around us right at midnight. It was amazing. It just went on and on. On the taxi ride back to the train station (I know, you can walk it, but it was damn cold), the streets had firecracker paper "drifts" along the sidewalks.

That was about the only NYE I enjoyed. The rest were attempts to have a good time that usually failed for one reason or another. For ages now I've just stayed home.

We would go up the Shutterlindenberg Hill and we would have a 360° view of the area even past the Rhine into France. Fireworks as far as the eye could see from all the surrounding towns and villages.

Pic from the net.

Wildest was the Vegas Strip many years ago.

I prefer a low key celebration now. To be honest, I'll probably be asleep before the ball drops this year.

Never was a big NYE person... will be the usual for New Orleans, sitting on my covered porch with a good scotch and a cigar guessing whether the "bangs" were fireworks or gun shots...

My craziest (or most pathetic) experience was 2006 or 2007. I can't remember what year it was.

I was in college at the time and was living in South Florida. We went out to a house party and I was wasted maybe by 9pm. I remember stumbling out to the front yard and lying down there in the grass. People were still getting to the party because it was early and were literally stepping over me. I

I think it was the most drunk I've ever been. I laid there in the front yard until after midnight and my friends were ready to leave.

Grew up an hr north of NYC,when we were seniors in HS we went to Times Sq to watch the ball drop in '87. Fight broke out in Times Sq,watched 3 people get shot 20' away from us,almost got trampled by the ensuing stampede and then by the NYPD horses rushing to the scene. Awesome time!!!

You couldn’t pay me to go to Times Square for New Years Eve. They herd you in like cattle. Then you are cordoned in and can’t leave your spot. If you have to go to the bathroom and leave, they won’t let you back to where you were. People get there hours in advance to get up close. No thank you!

When I was young, we would be at my great grandmothers house for New Years Eve. My fathers uncles would use saw dust to write the out going year in the street and set it on fire at midnight.

Nothin', but nothin' beats NYE on a boat on sydney harbour. Expensive. Worth it. Great atmosphere too, whole city is pumping. It's also where the mrs planted one on me on what was essentially our first date.

Times square seems odd, it is usually freezing and there's nothing to see but a ball drop....fucking weird man.
