What would you bring back

Like the title says, name three things you’d reintroduce in F1 today and why

For me-
1) Manual trans- with the sequential transmissions in F1 changing gears pretty much instantaneously, manually changing gears is an extra element in wheel to wheel racing
2) V10s- at the heart of sports is the entertainment factor, not much more I need to say on this
3) refueling- more strategies and encourages racing to the max instead of constantly managing the tires and doing a one stopper, more pit stops and with the drivers going all out all of the times means more fun

Your three are my top three.

My only other selection would be to bring back the old Hockenheim circuit layout. I loved how F1 had what was basically one big oval race, and it might really be interesting with the DRS of today.

I also liked the Catalunya circuit much better before they added that stupid chicane near the end of the lap.

I started following late 2009 right after Massa got hit by the spring so I can’t say much about the old Hockenheim layout. But definitely with you on the stupid slow left right at Catalunya, absolutely hate it. Overtaking would be much easier with the old curve.

Gotcha! Well Hockenheim used to be a basically flat out track that was unlike anything on the calendar except maybe for Monza. Here’s an OG track layout with Schuey and the glorious V10! When you see the first red Firestone sign, that’s where the drivers turn right now and go along a much shorter route. The old sections of the track are gone and the forest has reclaimed it. I miss these days so much!!

In 2006 at the Canadian GP we were able to hear the V10s run past us at what was probably 12-15krpm. We went down early to watch practice Friday after getting through an insane Thursday night. We were walking 10ft away the track and didn’t really hear it until it was about to pass because of the fucking pitch. The Ferraris tone was so distinctive back then. Just hearing that fucking kind of frequency range over a couple seconds was most tranquil adrenaline rush in the wurld. No explanation could detail that sound at such a high rpm.

I’ve played that track on Forza or Gran Turismo way back in the day. It’d be cool to watch the drivers flat spotting their tires and the late brakers at this track, especially with DRS

I tried to get a Sat-Sunday ticket for COTA recently but they’re all sold out, maybe they have crowd restrictions for COVID? I know they often break out the old cars when the F1 or junior teams aren’t on track. I was hoping to experience a 20k rpm V10 scream by for the first time. Hopefully this pandemic passes and I can go to COTA or the Canadian Gran Prix next year.

All good points fellas!

Plus, I kinda miss those maverick and single minded engineers/designers like Colin Chapman, Mauro Forghieri, Gordon Murray.
Nowadays it's probably more about facilitating the developers team.

The only carry-over from the mavericks seems to be Adrian Newey....love it that he designs and calcs using his infamous paper pad and pencil....he is a brilliant mind.
