shotgun for home protection

I'm don't know anything about shotguns, but I have been thinking to buy one for the home (just in case ). I'm not considering a hand gun because I have to get permits and all that crap.... etc. What do you guys recommend? something on a smaller scale for easy storage and access.

In a lot of states pistol grips and shotguns are illegal, just FYI.

But yeah, remington or mossberg are the classics

Buy pistol

Holds more bullets, cheaper, easy to use, and you can carry around the house when someone breaks in.

Hard to get the SBS approved, since you have to complete a Form 4 to get one, and many states don't allow SBSs (including CA with few exceptions.)

Unless yours is department issued, or you have a rare Form 4, you are looking at Federal and State felony charges.....

Definitely get a Remington 870. Great quality, reasonably priced and versatile. Plus you can pretty much find them at any big sporting goods place - or even sometimes Wal Mart.

I'd stay away from a Mossberg.

12 gauge autoloader with a normal stock and the minimium barrel allowed by law in your state. I'm only suggesting this for a couple of reasons:

#1 - pistol grips are sometime illegal, and it's 10x easier to fire the weapon with a normal stock since you're not frequently firing the weapon to begin with.

#2 - autoloader doesn't require you to remember to cycle the spent shell if you miss the first time. Remember if someone is in your house and you don't know if they're armed, you don't want to shoot, miss, and then go 'oh shit why isn't the gun firing again'. This is also important if a female may have to defend herself.

#3- 12 gauge carries more shot. I recommend slugs + 00 buckshot (00 is like getting hit by a bunch of .38's IIRC) or just straight 00 buckshot.

.

I agree completely. Just get a reasonably priced pump action shotgun with a short barrel and call it a day. You don't need anything expensive when it's going to spend 99.99% of its time sitting in a closet or under the bed.

The reason a shotgun is so great for home protection is that if there's actually someone in your home, their ass is headed out the door as soon as you rack a shell into it, and it's likely you'll never have to pull the trigger (unless you want to get them as they're going across the yard, which I'd recommend ).

Some of the combat shotguns above are cool, but are massively overkill for the intended purpose. You'll be much better off spending a fraction of the money saved on a couple of boxes of shells and a day at the range getting familiar with the new gun so that using it become second nature in an emergency.

I've had the Mossberg combo for so many years. It sits in the closet (in CA) with short barrel and pistol grip, magnum slugs hung on the side. I used to go with buddies and shoot skeet off the hip with the short/pistol. Pulling the pistol on the slugs I wouldn't want to do more than a few times, but in a home situation I don't expect I'd need more than one or two pulls anyways.
And with the Mossberg combo pack, it takes about 2 minutes to convert back to a conventional 12 guage with stock and barrel.
